Good Thing
Regular price $24.00 Save $-24.00Good Thing is the highly anticipated follow-up to Grammy nominated R&B singer/composer Leon Bridges' breakout 2015 debut Coming Home. Produced by Ricky Reed and Niles City Sound (Josh Block, Austin Jenkins and Chris Vivion), the goal here was to take Leon's music in a more modern R&B direction while retaining his renowned style. "I loved my experience with Coming Home," says Bridges. "But Good Things allows me to show more of my influences and art. I'm excited to present this diverse group of songs live." The album is introduced by the funky soul number "Bad Bad News" and tender orchestral ballad "Bet Is Not Worth the Hand."
Good Thing is born from the song "Bad Bad News," and its lyrics "They tell me I was born to lose, but I made a good good thing, out of bad bad news." Now, Leon's story is well known; He went from working as a dishwasher and battling on the open mic scene in his hometown, Fort Worth, TX to being a Grammy nominated artist, performing at the White House, attending the Met Gala and appearing on SNL in a period of two years. Now, an artist with more experience, shows us an album that illustrates the path of a man of small opportunity who embraces the world stage. If Coming Home was Leon Bridges in black and white, then Good Thing is Leon Bridges in Technicolor.
It Is What It Is (Red Vinyl)
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00Thundercat's new album It Is What It Is was co-produced with Flying Lotus and features musical contributions from Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, and Zack Fox.
It Is What It Is follows his game-changing third album Drunk (2017). That record completed his transition from virtuoso bassist to bonafide star and cemented his reputation as a unique voice that transcends genre. "This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that," Bruner says about It Is What It Is. "It's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don't necessarily understand...some things just aren't meant to be understood."
The unruly bounce of single "Black Qualls" is classic Thundercat, teaming up with Steve Lacy (The Internet) and Funk icon Steve Arrington (Slave). It's another example of Stephen Lee Bruner's desire to highlight the lineage of his music and pay his respects to the musicians who inspired him. Discovering Arrington's output in his late teens, Bruner says he fell in love with his music immediately: "The tone of the bass, the way his stuff feels and moves, it resonated through my whole body."

When I Get Home (Clear)
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00When I Get Home represents the next phase in Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Solange's evolution as an artist following the release of her critically acclaimed 2016 album A Seat at the Table. Written, performed, and executive produced by Solange, When I Get Home is an exploration of origin. It asks the question how much of ourselves do we bring with us versus leave behind in our evolution. The artist returned to Third Ward Houston to answer this. The album includes contributions from Tyler, the Creator, Chassol, Playboi Carti, Standing on the Corner, Panda Bear, Devin the Dude, The-Dream, and more. It also features samples from Third Ward's own Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, poet Pat Parker, and Scarface.
"Solange's breakthrough 2016 album, A Seat at the Table, was a sweet-voiced, multilayered manifesto: the sound of one black woman finding her path forward and confronting the ways systemic racism and sexism affect personal struggles. Its successor, When I Get Home, is something different: a reverie, a meditation, a therapeutic retreat, a musicians' playground." - The New York Times
"Solange's growth as an artist has been one of music's most fascinating stories, and, like A Seat at the Table, When I Get Home serves as a thrilling reminder that this is just the beginning of the futures she still has yet to unpack. If she can make a party-friendly album so meaningful, we've barely even witnessed the tip of her vision." - Rolling Stone
"When I Get Home reminds us that she's a frontrunner of R&B in her own right. With soothing production, enveloped with numbing vocals, she leaves you in a state of utopia. This surprise album of 2019 was something we didn't know we needed." - NME

Isolation
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00With her debut LP, Isolation, Kali Uchis stakes a very convincing claim at being the hot new crossover act of 2018. Hop scotching effortlessly between myriad genres, her mellifluous vocals shifting from sassy to angry, sultry to stinging, it's the sound of a musician coming fully, and gloriously, into her own. Shaped with a perfectionist's touch over two years, Isolation is an "open journal" of an album, one that maps moments of self-discovery in song. It builds on the classic pop and doo-wop blueprint of her Por Vida EP, to fully realize Uchis's sound, aided by an impressive cast of guests. Bookended by the airy, flute-laced "Body Language," and the immaculately orchestrated soul of "Killer," it turns through R&B, on the stuttering beats and skanking guitar of "Miami," and the "post-apocalyptic love song" "Tyrant," by way of popping funk on "Just A Stranger." Taken as a whole, the record doubles as both sleek, immaculate soul and Uchis' battlecry against the small-town cynicism she encountered growing up in Virginia.

Third Full-Length Following 2013's Universally Acclaimed Victim of Love
Soul singer Charles Bradley's star has been on the rise since the release of his widely praised 2011 debut album No Time For Dreaming, and his ascent has continued long after the release of his triumphant second album, 2013's Victim of Love. Dubbed "The Screaming Eagle of Soul," the singer is proud to present his highly anticipated third album Changes, on Daptone imprint Dunham Records.
The album is named for his popular, "smoldering" (SPIN) cover of the Black Sabbath track. "I think about the lyrics very closely when I sing ‘Changes' and get emotional," notes Bradley. "It makes me think of my mother and the changes in my life since she passed away."
By now, Bradley's remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabriel Roth. The documentary Charles Bradley: Soul of America, directed by Poull Brien, follows Bradley's extraordinary journey during the electrifying and transformative months leading up to the release of debut album No Time for Dreaming.
The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another and Victim of Love saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. Victim of Love went on to receive overwhelming praise and was included on numerous "Best of 2013" lists while the album's title track was also named one of Rolling Stone's "Best Songs of 2013."
Produced by Thomas Brenneck and backed by Menahan Street Band, with Changes, the powerhouse performer brings music fans of all ages another unforgettable set of songs and will continue to bring his live shows to stages around the world.
