When J Dilla, aka Detroit’s James Yancey, made Donuts, he was 31 years old and widely celebrated as a producer of rare talent, having worked with Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, and De La Soul, among many others. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure jazz, funk, and soul, and, as a talented drummer in his own right, he brought a rare sense of groove to the samples he chopped up on his trusty Akai MPC.

Donuts began simply enough - an idea to turn a good demo tape into a full-length album. It would end up being one of the defining works of Dilla's life. Completed during the year Dilla spent in and out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and released on his birthday, February 7, 2006, Donuts gained particular poignancy when he died three days later on February 10th.

Kintsugi takes its title from the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum, highlighting cracks rather than hiding them. As such, kintsugi represents a compassionate aesthetic philosophy in which damage and wear are embraced as part of an object’s history. Kintsugi was released after the departure of founding guitarist/keyboardist/producer Chris Walla, who recorded the album before announcing that he would be leaving the band, and features the hits “Black Sun” and “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive,” plus fan favorites “No Room in Frame,” “Little Wanderer,” and “Good Help (Is So Hard to Find)." Barsuk is pleased to release this double LP on standard weight black vinyl, packaged in the original deluxe gold-foil stamped gatefold jacket.

Available for the first time in general retail, this 12" combines V*gra Boys explosive debut EP "Consistency Of Energy" (2016) with the enigmatic "Call Of The Wild" EP.

IDLES and acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan) quickly formed a creative kinship, united by a deep mutual respect for each other's work. When Aronofsky began developing his latest film, Caught Stealing (starring Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz) he turned to IDLES, his favorite band, to shape the film's sonic identity. Drawing inspiration from the gritty energy of the 1990s New York punk scene that permeates the film, IDLES contributed four original tracks, a striking cover of "Police & Thieves," and recorded the full film score, composed by Rob Simonsen (Deadpool & Wolverine, The Whale, Foxcatcher). The world's longest running musical is celebrating it's 40th anniversary on October 8, 2025. To mark this event, we're re-releasing the recording of the 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall on First Night Records. This first-ever release on LP has been remastered and compiled for 2 LP vinyl especially by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and his team. The full recording on 2 CDs is also being reissued. The celebrated concert starred a dream cast featuring Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Michael Ball, Lea Salonga, Ruthie Henshall, Alun Armstrong, Jenny Galloway, Michael Maguire, Judy Kuhn, a company of 250 and the 70 piece London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Charles Abell.

For Aesop Rock, the phrase "I heard it's a mess there too" started out as a lyric, but it didn't take long for that line to get it's hooks into him. It felt familiar, like a line he'd said a thousand times in recent years while checking in with friends across different cities, swapping stories about where each other are, and what's going on there. The more he sat with the phrase, the more it started to feel like the center of something bigger. I Heard It's A Mess There Too lives at the intersection of two personal urges for Aesop: the need to venture out and document your surroundings, and the desire to stay connected-especially when things feel uncertain.

Musically, Aesop Rock explores some new territory on the album. "I'd been building tracks the same way for many years," he says, "but I made a conscious shift in my process here. I tried out some new tools and attempted to make my beats cleaner, more minimal. The drums are more stripped back, the bass lines are allowed to just sit, without layering ten things on top. I didn't want the beat and the vocals competing for attention-I just wanted enough to get a wave rolling and not much more, just setting a mood I could move to." These twelve songs mark different stops along that path of tinkering and looking for something new.

If you could go back in time ten years, what would you want to tell yourself? This was a question Khruangbin posed to themselves when approaching the ten-year anniversary of their debut album, the once cult classic, now genre-defining work The Universe Smiles Upon You. "If we could go back and tell ourselves how much was going to happen to us after that record, what would we want to celebrate?" asked Laura Lee, bassist, vocalist, and founding member of the band. Instead, they thought: "Let's do it again." The Universe Smiles Upon You ii was recorded on January 4-6, 2025, in the same family barn of guitarist Mark Speer, across the same dates where TUSUY was first conceived ten years earlier. Though the conditions were the same-dirt floor, brutally cold, minimal sound isolation, all takes live-the songs aren't. They're re-approached, some changed more than others, harnessing the lightning-in-a-bottle energy of TUSUY while discovering what would be unique this time around, in this stage of the band's life. The result moves like ripples on the water across ten hypnotizing tracks, the barn creating a sense of spaciousness, serenity and creative freedom, nearby wildlife (listen out for the birds on "August Twelve ii"), rattles and creaks of the barn and all. It's a tapestry of small movements in nuanced arrangements, slowly revealing the new life, stories and character of someone you've met again for the first time in ten years.

Violent Femmes is the debut album by Violent Femmes. Mostly recorded in July 1982, the album was released by Slash Records in April, 1983. Violent Femmes became one of the most distinctive records of the early alternative movement and an enduring cult classic. By combining elements of Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers with new wave and acoustic-folk and punk rock, the Femmes forged a sound all their own. Violent Femmes is the band's most successful album to date and achieved a rare feat by going gold, four years after it's release, and later platinum, four years after that, without having yet made an appearance on the Billboard 200 album chart. Violent Femmes have released nine studio albums and more than a dozen iconic singles. Their remarkable three-decade-plus career has earned them cumulative worldwide sales in excess of 10 million.
