Stranger in the Alps
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Produced by Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, the ten haunting and introspective songs on Stranger In The Alps further introduces 22-year-old Phoebe Bridgers as a singular voice. There is a delicate balance to her work, a dance between veiled narratives and earnest emotions, between whispers and shouts. Throughout her full-length debut, Bridgers contemplates and reflects on personal experiences through her unique lyric writing perspective: there are overt references to lost idols, canonical pop songs and actual incidents, but her stories unfold through specific, evocative imagery sung in her subtle, confessional style. From the weeping strings and Twin Peaks twangs of opening track "Smoke Signals," to the simple heartbreak of "Funeral" and melancholic crescendo of "Scott Street," Stranger in the Alps is a swooningly beautiful record with a gothic heart.

Cleopatra
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00Vinyl LP pressing. 2016 album from the Grammy-nominated outfit. It took four years for The Lumineers to follow up their platinum-plus self-titled debut - which spent 46 weeks on the Billboard 200 and peaked at #2 - but Cleopatra is well worth the wait. During that time, The Lumineers - whose original members Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites founded the band in Ramsey, New Jersey back in 2002 - earned a pair of Grammy nominations (Best New Artist, Best Americana Album). Cleopatra proves Schultz and Fraites - along with cellist/vocalist Neyla Pekarek- are neither taking their good fortune for granted, nor sitting back on their laurels. With the help of producer Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Avett Brothers), the man Wesley calls "our shaman," the band ensconced themselves in Clubhouse, a recording studio high atop a hill in rural Rhinebeck, N.Y., not far from Woodstock. The band had total artistic freedom in writing and recording the album, so Wesley and Jer pushed the envelope on experimental tracks like the stream-of-consciousness, purposely lo-fi "Sick in the Head," the yearning, piano chord build-up of "In the Light," or the closing orchestral instrumental, the aptly titled coda, "Patience." "We continue to make the kind of records we want to," says Wesley. "We believe in this music. It's a true labor of love. We just want to keep reaching more people with our songs." Given the evidence on The Lumineers' eagerly anticipated sophomore album Cleopatra, that shouldn't be a problem.

Fine Line
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00English singer/songwriter Harry Styles follows-up his platinum-certified, No. 1 charting 2017 solo debut with his highly anticipated second album, Fine Line. The pop star describes the album as being "all about having sex and feeling sad" and that the creative process was inspired by taking mushrooms and listening to Paul McCartney's Ram. The 12-track collection is introduced by the shimmering lead single "Lights Up" which was co-produced by Tyler Johnson and Kid Harpoon (aka Tom Hull).
"'Fine Line' feels like another confident exercise in Harry Styles' ongoing genre cross-over. It's a maturation from his debut that feels free from the weight of expectation. It bruises, broods and unshackles itself in all the right places, successfully taking us to the place most of it came to be: by that kinetic Californian coastline, coloured by the cool psychedelia its creator has fallen hopelessly in love with" (Vice).
The album's artwork features a fisheye photo of Styles taken by English fashion photographer Tim Walker.

The Queen is Dead
Regular price $31.00 Save $-31.00It's pretty safe to say that most view The Queen Is Dead as the best full-length studio effort ever offered by the Smiths. It arrived in June of 1986 to a rapturous critical reception and its reputation has remained consistent ever since, with "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" in particular having gone on to be seen as a stone-cold classic even by those who aren't full-fledged Smiths fans. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a publication on either side of the pond that doesn't acknowledge it as one of the greatest albums of the whole decade, thanks to songs like the dance-hall fun of "Frankly, Mr. Shankly," the impeccably depressing two-fer of "I Know It's Over" and "Never Had No One Ever," the jangly fun of "Cemetry Gates," and even the silliness of "Vicar in a Tutu."

Hysteria
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Essential listening for any music fan, Def Leppard's Hysteria indisputably ranks as one of the most decorated and revered rock albums of all time. Now, for its 30th anniversary, it is finally remastered and available on a 180g 2LP set with wider, deeper grooves to accommodate its 60-minute-plus running length. As the group's second consecutive RIAA Diamond-certified record (over 10 million sales in the US), it would go on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide. Moreover, Hysteria staked a spot in the US Top 40 for 96 weeks matched only by Born in the U.S.A. UK's Q places it among the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time and Rolling Stone touts it on the prestigious 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Dominating multiple charts, it captured #1 in the UK album charts and on the USA Billboard Top 200 bolstered by immortal Top 5 anthems such as "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Animal," "Love Bites," "Hysteria," "Rocket" and "Armageddon It."
Hysteria continues to leave an indelible mark on rock n' roll. Powered by stadium-filling drums, rapturous guitars, and unshakable choruses, the Mutt Lange-produced record saw Def Leppard rightfully claim their place among rock's divinities forever. Frontman Joe Elliott says, "It's hard to believe that it's been thirty years since the release of Hysteria...In some respects it really does seem like only yesterday. So, to mark this milestone, we wanted to do something very special for our fans and give them the definitive version of the album..." Adds Phil Collen, "I look back at the whole Hysteria experience with excitement along with fond and tragic memories. It was our commercial zenith thanks to Mutt Lange's insistence that we create an artistic hybrid between hard rock and pop top 40 music using every genre available as an inspiration. It was a rock album that would garner seven hit singles. Mission accomplished."

Texas Sun Ep
Regular price $21.00 Save $-21.00Driving anywhere in Texas can cost you half a day, easy. For example, it'll take you over four hours just to get from R&B singer Leon Bridges' hometown of Fort Worth down to Houston, where the psychedelic wanderers in Khruangbin hail from. The state is vast, crisscrossed with rugged expanses of road flanked by limestone cliffs and granite mountains, forests of pine and mesquite, miles of desert or acres of sprawling grassland, all depending on what part you're in. And it's all baking under the Texas Sun that lends its name to Bridges and Khruangbin's new collaborative EP. "Big sky country, that's what they call Texas," Khruangbin bassist Laura Lee says. "The horizon line goes all the way from one side to another without interruption. There's something really comforting about that." On Texas Sun, these two members of the state's musical vanguard meet up somewhere in the middle of that scene, in the mythical nexus of Texas' past, present, and future – a dreamy badlands where genres blur as seamlessly as the terrain.

Cry Baby
Regular price $37.00 Save $-37.00Melanie Martinez Cry Baby on LP + Download
Melanie Martinez wants to tell you a story. It's fictional, but it's also about her, in a way that's somewhat exaggerated and darker than reality. The tale traces through Melanie's debut album Cry Baby, a collection of pop songs that draw inspiration from singer-songwriter folk and hip-hop and follow a character who learns to be more comfortable with who she is.
The inspiration for Cry Baby struck when Melanie, who hails from Baldwin, NY, became obsessed with vintage toy sounds. The musician began writing songs and playing guitar at 14, combining her loves for poetry and music. She taught herself to play since her parents couldn't afford to send her to guitar lessons, and was influenced both by her dad's predilection for old school hip-hop and her own interest in folk songwriters like Regina Spektor and Feist. After appearing on The Voice, Melanie signed with Atlantic and headed into the studio to begin writing songs. During an early session, after Melanie asked her producer to play some toy sounds, she came up with "Dollhouse," the origin of the story.
The album, which Melanie created with producers and songwriters like Kinetics and One Love, embraces childlike themes and imagery, connecting each song together like a children's storybook. But the recent adult experiences in Melanie's own life, with relationships and heartbreak and self-discovery, are juxtaposed against these young aesthetics in a deeply interesting way. "Carousel," which also appeared on last year's Dollhouse EP and was used to soundtrack a trailer for FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show, conjures up a carnival to reveal Melanie's feeling of being stuck in a cyclical relationship.
"Pity Party," which Melanie made with Kara Dioguardi and CJ Baran, revisits Lesley Gore's 1965 classic "It's My Party." The single, a buoyant pop number that draws in ambient trip-hop beats and string augmentation, is a cathartic release, both musically and for Melanie lyrically. The familiar, catchy chorus draws you in, urging the listener to participate in Cry Baby's fury.

Brushfire Fairytales
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00From its humble beginnings, 2001's Brushfire Fairytales launched the meteoric career of the modern master of soft acoustic folk and surf rock, Jack Johnson. Cut to nearly 20 years later and the singer/songwriter's auspicious debut has stood the test of time selling over 2.5 million copies to date and continues to be one of the best sellers in his catalog. An ear for the irresistible – whether in the vocal delivery or the construction of a pop hook – certainly accounts for its success.
It starts with "Inaudible Melodies," a reference to the singer's laid-back, not to say reticent persona in the early days, and includes some lovely gems like "Flake," with Ben Harper on pedal steel. Only a minor hit, as a single, "Flake" still became a signature tune and live staple. The equally impressive "Drink the Water" is a face up to your fears type song. All have the magic of the campfire; honest, inclusive and warm-hearted tracks that bring folks together.
Remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes, this is a true AAA edition pressed at RTI on HQ Vinyl 180g for unsurpassed quality and long life. A must for audiophiles and beach bums alike!
Black Pumas (LTD Edition, Cream Colored Vinyl)
Regular price $27.00 Save $-27.00Black Pumas is led by the creative partnership between Grammy Award-winning guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada and songwriter Eric Burton. The latter is a relative newcomer who arrived in Austin in 2015 after busking his way across the country from Los Angeles, while Quesada has a storied reputation for playing in bands like Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. After the two connected via friends in the Austin scene, they began to collaborate on a new sound that transmutes soul into something idiosyncratically modern.
Reminiscent of Ghostface Killah and Motown in equal measure, this original sound ensured that Black Pumas' weekly residency at C-Boys quickly became "the hottest party in town" (Austin-American Statesman). Produced by Quesada in his home studio and colored by Burton's dark imagery and haunting vocals, their eponymous debut is equally as indebted to East Coast hip-hop as it is to classic funk and soul, resulting in a project that is of the moment rather than retro. From the roiling, solar eclipse-inspired noir of "Black Moon Rising" to the ponderous yet epic "Oct 33," it's a stunner.
