Flower Boy
Regular price $32.98 Save $-32.98Odd Future co-founder and mini mogul Tyler The Creator issues his fourth studio album, Flower Boy on Columbia Records. Debuting at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200, the fully realized follow-up to 2015's Cherry Bomb is ushered in by the formidable singles "Who Dat Boy" with A$AP Rocky and "911 / Mr. Lonely" with Frank Ocean, Steve Lacy and Anna of the North and finds Tyler maturing as both a writer and producer. "Built on memories and not relying on nostalgia too heavily, Flower Boy is a beautiful album about the realities of growing up," writes Pigeons And Planes. "Losing friends, reminiscing, but not glorifying the teenage days when jokes were funnier the more offensive they are."

License to Ill
Regular price $32.99 Save $-32.99In November 1986, the Beastie Boys released their debut album Licensed To Ill on Def Jam/Columbia. It stands as one of Columbia's fastest-selling debuts to date and eventually sold over nine million copies in the U.S. alone. Licensed To Ill is still the only album by a white hip-hop act to receive the coveted 5 mics from the Source who has selected the album as one of the best 100 Best Rap Albums of all-time. Playful music videos were made for the classic cuts "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)," "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," "Girls," "Hold It Now Hit It," "Rhymin' and Stealin'" and "She's Crafty," while further gems like "Brass Monkey," "Paul Revere," and "Time To Get Ill" proved Licensed To Ill to be all killer no filler.
Kerry King of Slayer even made an appearance on the album playing lead guitar on "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," which was named as a spoof on Motorhead's No Sleep 'til Hammersmith album. King's appearance came about because Rick Rubin was producing both bands simultaneously (Slayer's Reign in Blood was also originally released on Dej Jam). The album's iconic cover, front to back, features a Boeing 727 - with Beastie Boys emblazoned on the tail - crashing head-on into the side of a mountain, appearing as an extinguished joint. The tail of the plane has the Def Jam logo and the legend '3MTA3' which spells 'EATME' when viewed in a mirror.

The group was formed in Compton, California in 1986 by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Shortly after composing "Boys N the Hood," they added DJ Yella, the D.O.C. and Arabian Prince to the lineup. N.W.A.'s first album, N.W.A And the Posse, was released in 1987. The following year, the group added the edgy vocals of MC Ren. 3 Feet High And Rising - Magenta [Explicit Content]
Regular price $38.98 Save $-38.98Double magenta colored vinyl LP pressing. 3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip hop trio de la Soul and was released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number, " "Buddy, " and "Eye Know". The album title came from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". It is listed on Rolling Stone's 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held it's annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on the Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, de la Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, "Me, Myself and I". Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a "hippie" group, based on their declaration of the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap).

Birds In The Trap Sing Mcknight [Explicit Content]
Regular price $32.98 Save $-32.98Reigning triumphantly at the top, Travis Scott's critically acclaimed second full-length album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight (Epic Records/Grand Hustle), landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. This marks the platinum-selling hip-hop maverick's first No. 1 bow on the Top 200 and firmly cements his status as one of music's modern leaders.
Pitchfork claimed, "Scotts's second studio album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, is the Houston rapper's most concise and cohesive project to date," adding, "He has always been a mood-setter and a vocalist, and he is in full command of the vibe, tone, and mood of this entire project more than ever." W Magazine fittingly dubbed him, "Your new rap superhero" while Billboard described the album as "his own trap opera."
Over the course of 14 tracks, Travis threads together an engaging, enthralling, and epic patchwork of anesthetized and apocalyptic production, mind-numbing raps, and glorious hooks punctuated by an A-list cast of collaborators. Kendrick Lamar delivers hard-hitting and hypnotic bars in the middle of "Goosebumps" just before a signature chantable chorus. "The Ends" veers between a haunting hum and a verse-for-verse tandem of our protagonist and Andre 3000 of OutKast. "Way Back" drips into a searing guitar solo as "Sweet Sweet" fires off one of his stickiest hooks to date. By the time The Weeknd and Travis serve up a smooth send-off on "Wonderful," you're in the trap for life, and you won't want to leave...

Regular price $32.98 Save $-32.98BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "1nce Again" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By a Duo Or Group. A Tribe Called Quest seem to grow, both musically and lyrically, with every LP, constantly setting standards for other rappers to follow. But they rarely stray from their chosen path. Since their 1990 debut, hip-hop has gone through numerous phases (new jack swing, gangster, hardcore), but the Tribe have remained focused on the music's true elements: BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE. Produced by the Ummah, which consists of the Tribe's Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad along with newcomer Jay Dee, BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE sports the usual jazzy beats, and reintroduces Tribe as the all-around hip-hop group. Muhammad's use of funky samples, Phife's self-satisfying attitude, and Q-Tip's abstract poetry are only part of the reason why the trio keeps rap music on lockdown. There are other bands capable of experimenting with new sounds while delivering lyrical positivism, but they often forget how to simply rock the crowd. A Tribe Called Quest does that, too.
