The Smiths

During the course of their career, The Smiths released a trifecta of compilation albums which every fan worth their salt felt obliged to own, even though two of them were originally only available in the UK and one was only available in the US. The first of the UK-only releases was the immortal Hatful of Hollow. Issued in 1984 shortly after The Smiths eponymous debut it collects various singles, B-sides and BBC Radio 1 studio recordings with John Peel and David Jensen. In addition to early, raw versions of many key tracks from The Smiths such as "Reel Around the Fountain," "You've Got Everything Now," "Still Ill," "Hand in Glove" and "What Difference Does It Make?," Hatful of Hollow also boasts many of the band's finest singles with "William, It Was Really Nothing," "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," "Back to the Old House," "Girl Afraid" and "How Soon Is Now?" A wonderful early document from the definitive British indie rock band!

The Smiths' eclectic 1985 release finds the band branching out into rockabilly, post-punk and flashes of funk, all while refining the guitar pop of their debut. Produced by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Meat Is Murder is the band's sole studio album to reach No. 1 on the U.K. charts. "The Headmaster Ritual" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" are fine elaborations on the formula the band introduced on their debut, while "Rusholme Ruffians" is an infectious take on rockabilly. There was no other British group making music quite like this in 1985.

Recorded live at the National Ballroom, London, in October of 1986, roughly six months before they disbanded altogether, these 14 songs capture The Smiths performing in full-on rock-star mode. Here the band's performance is suitably epic, hit-packed, and engrossing. Morrissey is in fine form providing plenty of banter and personality. Similarly, Marr's distinctive manic jangle demands much attention, especially on his solo creation "The Draize Train."

It's pretty safe to say that most view The Queen Is Dead as the best full-length studio effort ever offered by the Smiths. It arrived in June of 1986 to a rapturous critical reception and its reputation has remained consistent ever since, with "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" in particular having gone on to be seen as a stone-cold classic even by those who aren't full-fledged Smiths fans. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a publication on either side of the pond that doesn't acknowledge it as one of the greatest albums of the whole decade, thanks to songs like the dance-hall fun of "Frankly, Mr. Shankly," the impeccably depressing two-fer of "I Know It's Over" and "Never Had No One Ever," the jangly fun of "Cemetry Gates," and even the silliness of "Vicar in a Tutu."

With synthesizers and mind-numbing excess on the rise, The Smiths took the road less traveled, challenging listeners with outspoken lyrics and taunting guitars.
