Beaster (Extended Play, Colored Vinyl, Red)
Regular price $28.98 Save $-28.98Limited red colored vinyl LP pressing. Beaster is the second album by Sugar, the short-lived but brilliant trio featuring former Husker du singer / guitarist Bob Mould. Released in April 1993, and recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced it's 1992 predecessor Copper Blue, this concise 6-song suite entered the UK album charts at no. 3, a remarkable achievement for such a noisy and uncompromising rock record. Although darker in tone than the widescreen power pop of Copper Blue, Beaster contains some of Bob Mould's most powerful songs, from the splenetic frenzies of Tilted and JC Auto, the religious torture chamber imagery of 'Judas Cradle', the transcendent Feeling Better, or the elegiac finale Walking Away.

The collaboration between Winters and Waters resulted in three albums, which blues fans describe as a unique combination that showcased Muddy Waters' rawness and years of experience to perfection. The impressive roster of featured artists included "Pine Top" Perkins on piano and Walter Horton on the harmonica, making it a dream late-career collaboration. Hen's Teeth (Colored Vinyl, White)
Regular price $24.98 Save $-24.98Loser Edition on transparent white vinyl. "I've always wanted to use that title," Sam Beam says of Hen's Teeth, his eighth full-length album and his sixth for Sub Pop Records. "I just love it. To me it suggests the impossible. Hen's teeth do not exist. And that's what this record felt like: a gift that shouldn't be there but it is."
Hen's Teeth and his previous album, Light Verse, are siblings of a sort. They were recorded during the same sessions after a year-long dry spell, with the same band, at Waystation studio in Laurel Canyon. "I'm at a point in my life where spontaneity is a lot more important to me. I'm a lot freer and I love making music more than ever. There are no right or wrong answers. You just pray for your luck and try your best." In this case prayers were answered and luck struck hard. The musicians cohered so quickly that they were often getting songs recorded in just a few takes, sometimes at the rate of two or three per day. The two albums might therefore be thought of as fraternal twins: they share DNA and complement each other, but are defined as much by their differences as their similarities. Light Verse (2024) took it's name from a form of poetry that makes heavy use of wordplay, humor, and nonsense. It's a sweet and airy album, impressionistic, at times even flirting with abstraction, a hearty shaking off of the doom and gloom of the Covid era. The world of Hen's Teeth is earthier, darker, more robust and more tactile than that of Light Verse. The songs have titles like "Roses," "Robin's Egg," "Dates and Dead People," "Singing Saw." The cover is a portrait of Beam surrounded on all sides by flourishing ferns and other tropical plant life - a surreal scene that contrasts starkly with the cool blue-white palette of Light Verse. As for the music, Beam says: "The experiments in this one were more with genre than with form. For the last couple years one of my go-to's has been Van Morrisson's Astral Weeks, that style where jazz musicians play folk music and it blossoms in different ways than folk musicians are normally interested in doing." The results nod to everything from Dock Boggs to Simon & Garfunkel to Tropicalia. And Beam continues to incorporate collaborations: "It's exciting, making it more of a family affair. Interacting with a bunch of friends and being blown away by what they can bring, musically and emotionally. I get to play all day with these people I love and they respond by giving me their most vulnerable, expressive self. It's the weirdest, best job ever." Hen's Teeth features David Garza on guitar, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, and Tyler Chester on keyboards. Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, and Kyle Crane all play drums. Paul Cartwright handled string arrangements, and plays violin and mandolin among others. The indie-country trio I'm With Her appears on the ebullient lead single, "Robin's Egg," and again on the tender, mournful "Wait Up." Beam's daughter Arden contributes harmonies and backing vocals on three tracks. Born two months before the release of his debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002), she is now 23 years old and a musician herself-the first of his children to appear on one of his records.

The Toxic Avenger (Original Soundtrack)
Regular price $37.98 Save $-37.98Vinyl LP pressing. Mutant, in partnership with Lakeshore Records and Legendary Entertainment, is proud to present The Toxic Avenger - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring a wildly eclectic score and original songs by composers Brooke and Will Blair. In this unhinged reimagining of Lloyd Kaufman's cult classic, the brothers capture the chaos, the silliness, and the triumphant heart of the original Troma trilogy. The guitar-drenched orchestral score careens from surfy crime-jazz and occult rock to Bossa Nova, classic superhero motifs, and an unhinged take on Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" (featured in the original Toxic Avenger) - complete with burps, farts, and the Prague Philharmonic. The pair also deliver original songs, including the nu-rap/slop-rock hit "(We Are) Crazy and Dangerous" from on-screen goth villains The Killer Nutz, their B-side "My Baby is an Axe," and the classic Doo Wop ode to young lovers "The Good Things" by fictional '50s group The Whoopsie Dews. Over 120 musicians in eight countries contributed to the soundtrack, including Medirecon. A generator recorded this 16-piece Kyiv-based string ensemble after Russian forces cut power to the city's power grid during the early days of the occupation. The year-long composing effort resulted in a soundtrack that's as fun, messy, and moving as the Troma films that inspired it. "The original Toxie soundtrack was such a bonkers mash-up of styles," says Will Blair. "Dancey-pop songs would be followed by punk rock, then go immediately into big orchestral pieces, followed by weird electro score - and it not only worked, it became part of the Troma experience. We trusted it would work with Macon's version of Toxie, and we're grateful he cut us loose to throw everything we had at it." Written and directed by the Blairs' older brother, Macon Blair, and starring Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon, The Toxic Avenger follows janitor Winston Gooze, who - after a freak toxic accident - mutates into an unlikely hero battling corporate overlords and corruption to save his son and his community. The album also comes complete with liner notes by writer/director Macon Blair as well as composers Brooke Blair and Will Blair, and is pressed on 140gm toxic black and green vinyl with glow-in-the-dark splatter and housed inside a silver mirrorboard jacket with glow-in-the-dark elements. Saint Cecilia EP
Regular price $20.98 Save $-20.98Vinyl LP pressing. 2016 live release from Dave Grohl and his Foo friends. Recorded at its namesake the Saint Cecilia Hotel in the midst of the band's two headline sets at this year's Austin City Limits festival, Foo Fighters' five-song Saint Cecilia EP is both a scrapbook of nearly forgotten moments in the band's 20-year odyssey and a heartfelt thank you to the legions of FF faithful who have made that journey possible. Returning to the city where the Sonic Highways' album and HBO documentary series concept was born, Foo Fighters instantly transformed the intimate, secluded retreat into a makeshift studio: Within a day, the office became a control room, the bar was littered with mics and cable, the kitchen packed with amps and the fireplace obstructed by a drum kit. Decades of music no one outside the band had heard, fragments and long forgotten riffs from every album - closing cut "The Neverending Sigh" is 20 years old! - were exhumed or pieced together for the first time, all without the usual pressures and expectations that come with making an album. Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee-and old friend Ben Kweller, who happened by one night and ended up adding backing vocals to the title track, sound as happy and relaxed as only a musical family reunion can.
