According to legend, when the Wu-Tang Clan formed like Voltron on their debut album in 1993, GZA happened to be the head, an appropriate place for a man also called 'The Genius.' Yet at the time few could have predicted that his 1995 masterpiece Liquid Swords would be considered "one of the most substantial lyrical journeys in hip-hop history" (Chicago Tribune).
At the peak of his powers as a producer, Wu-Tang mastermind RZA crafted the album's distinctive soundtrack at his basement studio in Staten Island; a haunting landscape of dusty samples, sharp snares and menacing urban gloom, with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic Samurai flick Shogun Assassin.
Cerebral, strategic and precise with his words, GZA crystallizes a range of influences, from chess to kung-fu films to mob flicks and Eastern philosophy, into sharply delivered rhymes. The album features appearances by the entire Wu-Tang Clan, and includes the auspicious debut of Killah Priest on "B.I.B.L.E."
GZA's auspicious solo debut Liquid Swords has been acknowledged as one of the '100 Best Rap Albums' (The Source) and 'Top 100 Records of the 1990s' (Pitchfork).

KOD
Regular price $32.00 Save $-32.00J. Cole's fifth full-length effort, KOD debuted atop the Billboard 200 in April 2018, marking the North Carolina rapper's fifth consecutive No. 1 album. KOD - which stands for Kids On Drugs, King Overdosed and Kill Our Demons - takes us into a new world highlighting addictions of all sorts. The gold certified record is home to the two Top 10 singles "KOD" and "ATM." Cole explains the three acronyms starting with Kids On Drugs, "If I turn on the TV right now, it's not gonna take long for there to be an advertisement that pops up that says 'Are you feeling down? Have you been having lonely thoughts?' And then they shove a pill in your face. The first response of any problem is Medicate." As for King Overdosed he adds, "That's representing me, the times that I was, and am, afflicted by the same methods of escape." And Kill Our Demons, he explains, "That's the end goal: To face our shit, realize that we have some shit going on inside, everybody...whether it be from traumatic childhood experiences, whether it be from a lack of attention, confidence issues, insecurities. Whatever it is, we gotta be honest with ourselves."

NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Regular price $29.98 Save $-29.98Vinyl LP pressing. Mac Miller's Swimming marked a pivotal point in the late artist's career. His devotion to constant sonic exploration and artistic reinvention had already been well-documented prior to the album's release - the quantum leap from his Billboard chart-topping debut Blue Slide Park to his sophomore album Watching Movies with the Sound Off, his tour de force as a producer on his 2014 mixtape Faces and ability to direct a full band on 2016's The Divine Feminine were evidence of his steadfast commitment to growth in his craft. Yet upon it's release, Swimming was immediately understood by both his fans and critics alike as the high water mark of his career: an album that perfectly showcased the musical chops he had developed vocally and instrumentally over the course of a decade. This understanding was reinforced when, just 3 days after the album's release, NPR Music published a Tiny Desk Concert where Miller and band performed album cuts "Small Worlds," "What's The Use?" featuring regular collaborator Thundercat and "2009" with a full band. The now-iconic performance remains one of the highest streamed performances in the history of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series and is now available on vinyl for the first time.

Crybaby (Clear Vinyl, White)
Regular price $32.00 Save $-32.00Lil Peep - Lil Peep Crybaby 1st Press 45rpm - n interviews that followed the release of Crybaby, and even afterwards during press runs for HELLBOY as well as Come Over When You're Sober Pt. 1, one of the most consistently asked (and answered) questions that would be thrown at Peep usually teetered around the lines somewhat of "aye Peep, love what you've been doing with your past couple of projects man, but what's the deal with that massive Crybaby tattoo you got on your forehead?" - To which, he would typically answer, "I got the Crybaby tat to keep me grateful, to remind myself that even if I'm going through a lot, there are kids across the world that don't even have clean water or know when their next meal will be, so I got it to remind myself that I need to be grateful for what little I have, and to keep pushing through for those who can't." - With this context now surrounding the whole ethos of this project, it seems fitting that the whole mixtape essentially focuses on Peep's hopes, dreams, and overcoming the emotions that ever so powerfully bled through nearly every song on here one way or another. Whether it's through the haunting coke lines on "Lil Jeep" and the Radiohead-sampled "Falling 4 Me", or through the ambitious glimpse into the future that initially got him signed in the first place with the Smokeasac-produced signature track "Nineteen", he flips blatant samples and turns them into his own songs. For example, there's a borderline "Wonderwall' cover (and hear me out on this one) in the shape of "Yesterday," where he paints a bleak picture of getting out of a toxic environment with the chorus "Change my name, shave my head // Tell my friends that I'm dead, run away from the pain // Yesterday is not today, it's not the same," that winds up adding to the source material more often than it taking away anything. - More notably though perhaps, is that he never conveys a sense of giving up when singing/rapping about any of these topics, and that only aids the sense of triumph found in moments all throughout the record. While it may seem like Peep is promoting all of the wrong things, what people don't seem to realize is that he never condones it; it's almost as if he's telling the listener to not make the same mistakes as he did, which eventually led to his untimely death just over a year later.

That's the only way to explain the specificity of Four Tet and Madlib's collaboration, in the special album, Sound Ancestors, that showcases a two-decade long friendship. The collection follows in the big shoes of Madlib classics like Quasimoto's The Unseen, Madvillainy and his Pinata and Bandana albums with Freddie Gibbs.
"A few months ago I completed work on an album with my friend Madlib that we'd been making for the last few years," explains Kieren Hebden aka Four Tet. "He is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album. Not made into beats for vocalists to use but instead arranged into tracks that could all flow together in an album designed to be listened to start to finish. I put this concept to him when we were hanging out eating some nice food one day and we decided to work on this together with him sending me tracks, loops, ideas and experiments that I would arrange, edit, manipulate and combine. I was sent hundreds of pieces of music over a couple of years stretch and during that time I put together this album with all the parts that fitted with my vision."
