New Dawn
Regular price $29.99 Save $-29.99Two days after his 100th birthday, Marshall Allen embarked on a remarkable journey with the creation of New Dawn, his debut solo album. A revered member of The Sun Ra Arkestra since 1958 and the ensemble's leader since Sun Ra's departure from this realm in 1993, Allen's career has spanned nearly seventy years, yet this marks the first time he has released a solo record under his own name. Rather than bookending an era, New Dawn presents itself as a new chapter for Allen - a love letter to spacetime that channels a century of musical transience and transcendence into seven outer dimensional tracks. A pioneer of the avant-garde, Allen's contributions both inside and beyond the Arkestra are legendary. Allen's voice is one of cosmic spirit, transcending the boundaries of traditional jazz and offering an emotional and spiritual resonance that has drawn comparisons to "Johnny Hodges from outer space." Allen's music has always been more than just sound, journeying through all strata of creative exploration. His mastery of the saxophone, alongside his dedication and demonstration of Sun Ra's teachings, has placed him in a distinct position within the avant-garde jazz universe for decades. New Dawn presents an intimate side of Allen rarely heard before. The album, recorded in Philadelphia in May 2024, was a collaborative effort with Knoel Scott, a fellow Arkestra member and lifelong friend. "Knoel's energy became the driving force behind the project," notes New Dawn producer Jan Lankisch. "He knew Marshall better than anyone, and his deep understanding of Marshall's compositions guided the selection of material for the album." Scott and Allen pored through an archive of unrecorded material, carefully selecting compositions that would showcase Allen's vast musical range. Though the album is informed by the philosophy of Sun Ra, it also marks a significant moment of artistic independence for Allen. New Dawn is more than just an extension of Ra's legacy; it is a testament to Allen's unique voice within the entire cosmos of jazz. As Lankisch describes, "We have created a record that showcases Marshall Allen's musical versatility, including a surprising calmer side we may not have heard before." From the subdued, transdimensional palettes of New Dawn to the boppy big band elements, the album demonstrates Allen's boundless ability to move through genres and emotions. New Dawn draws from Allen's deep well of collaboration to bring together a cast of musicians who share his spectral vision. Scott helped assemble a team of Philadelphia's brightest jazz stars and Arkestra veterans to join Allen in the studio, including Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks (trumpet), Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass), Bruce Edwards (guitar), and George Gray (drums) amongst other players. Together, they create a space where Allen's compositions can breathe and evolve, with improvisation and spontaneity woven into every track. "New Dawn," the album's title track, is made all the more potent by the addition of Neneh Cherry's unmistakable voice. The song reflects Allen's ability to balance complexity with clarity, moving from serene introspection to explosive musicality. As the track unfolds, it becomes a perfect encapsulation of the album's spirit: the melding of the past and the future, of legacy and discovery. New Dawn is a record that will resonate with listeners long after the final note has been played. It is a cosmic covenant that documents Marshall Allen's unyielding spirit and creative vision - one that has transcended genre, time, and space.

Rose In The Dark
Regular price $65.99 Save $-65.9920 year old Cleo Sol was born to musical parents who met in a Jazz band. Her Mum, half Serbian and Spanish, is a singer and plays the guitar and flute. Cleo's Jamaican Dad plays the bass and piano. Cleo quickly became the singer in the family, jostling for attention amongst seven other siblings, she received a second hand karaoke player from her mum which gave her a platform to display her early talents to her musical family. It was Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry Bout a Thing' that struck the loudest chord with Cleo as a youngster discovering music. "It's inspirational in terms of putting together a track, the technicalities of the song, and how Stevie sounds so perfect in just one take. That's how music should be".Cleo's inspirations derive from her parents musical passions, shuffling through a record collection of classics across Motown, Reggae, Latin, and Acid Jazz. Cleo developed her own taste, inspired by pop culture of the day. Akin to millions of other young girls, Cleo loved the Spice Girls, and wanted to grow up to be flame-haired Geri. These days she's loving House music, Ed Sheeran, Wretch 32 and Frank Ocean. A West London girl at heart, Cleo was born and raised in Ladbroke Grove and was brought up with a strong sense of community. A regular at the annual, famous Notting Hill Carnival, Cleo is often spotted cycling around the roads of West London. The slightly cooler, more beautiful 'girl-next-door', Cleo, loves fashion and she says her style is influenced by her Dad's 'rockabilly', mixed with grunge and 80's era music; "If all else fails, it's all about the big hair and big earrings", she says. A stint at a local youth centre paired with a dedicated and motivational singing teacher came together to alter Cleo's passion for singing from a hobby to a serious profession at the age of 16, and she began song-writing and honing her vocals on a weekly basis, later performing at monthly showcases. After reinventing herself as 'Cleo Sol' (the Sol paying homage to her sunny Spanish heritage) and posting a few tracks onto her MySpace page in her late teens, veteran underground producer Davinche (Kano's P's & Q's) spotted the singer and asked her to collaborate on some tracks. Her relationship with Davinche would prove to be instrumental in putting Cleo on the map in terms of the UK underground music scene. The partnership with Davinche led to tracks with Tinie Tempah on 'Tears', Wretch 32's 'Dancefloor', Davinche's 'Hero' and 'Riding for Love' alongside Bashy. Cleo also featured on 'Give a Little Love', the official Orange Rockcorps anthem alongside Roll Deep, Wretch 32 and Aggro Santos. Showing her versatility, Cleo also featured on Funky House songs 'Addicted' and 'Time to Let Go'.

Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right - Ultra Clear
Regular price $24.98 Save $-24.98ULTRA CLEAR Vinyl with insert, 180gm. In Mallrat's (aka Grace Shaw's) vision of the world, light is more than photons and electromagnetic radiation hitting the eye it's a moment of divine intervention. A bold swerve into the metaphysical, this is the premise of the prized Brisbane-born, LA-based pop songwriter and producer's 2025 sophomore album: Light hit my face like a straight right. Set against a newly informed backdrop of expressive breakbeats and dance music, it's 12 songs explore the intangible and mysterious allure of human connection, held together by curious investigations into light "the closest thing to a concept this album has," Mallrat says. She reunited with Butterfly Blue producers Styalz Fuego (Troye Sivan, Tate McRae) and Alice Ivy, while bringing into the mix indie electronic producers Chrome Sparks and Casey MQ, whose music - made with French artist Oklou - Grace was listening to a lot at the time. Together, they puzzled out the misty, dance-fueled soundscape that branches out and evolves on her initial references. Mallrat serves up highs like "Hideaway", a song where heart-racing garage clashes with her trademark candor: "I'll be your lucky charm just let me hang around your neck," she sings. Sleek and early standout "Pavement" gets a gritty underlayer with chopped up vocals from DJ Zirk's "Born 2 Lose" and mid-album standout "Hocus Pocus" finds Mallrat singing about being pulled "under the spell" of someone new, borrowing a different part of the same DJ Zirk sample to build it's shimmering, dancefloor-ready facade. It's an endeavor that perhaps reaches a peak on "Horses," the record's gentle and organic closer which Shaw herself calls "objectively the best song." Written after returning home to Brisbane and "feeling like an alien," it gained new meaning in the wake of her late sister's passing. For Shaw, it's the convergence of the song's minimalism, lyrics, space, and the way her voice cracks on the recording as she sings, "Hey, I'm right here, I look different now." After years of solidifying herself as a master of well-crafted, timeless pop - fielding recognition from New York Times, NYLON, Teen Vogue, Billboard, The FADER, NPR, and more - Light hit my face like a straight right is a step into the art of world-building, bolstered by her intuitive songwriting and clever, studied production.

Bryter Layter
Regular price $27.98 Save $-27.98The second album from Nick Drake came in 1970, and while not quite as melancholy as his debut, Five Leaves Left, there are certain brooding qualities that continued to propagate the Nick Drake mystique. Horns, flute, and strings arrangements lift such songs as "At the Chime of a City Clock" and "Hazy Jane I" and "II" out of the realm of sad, folk-guitar music into something jazzier and lighter, while the beautiful piano and simple guitar of "One of These Things First" laments what could have been without sounding like a song of despair. But two tracks featuring John Cale on various instruments (such as viola and harpsichord) have the dark fragility of "Pink Moon": The lovely "Fly" is a fragile apparition, and "Northern Sky" is a dreamy, brooding plea for long-lasting love. Definitely not the same mood music as his starker work, but still a fine showcase for Nick Drake. Musician include:: Richard Thompson, guitar; Dave Pegg, bass; Dave Mattacks, drums; John Cale, keyboards and viola; Ray Warleigh, viola and flute; Pat Arnold and Doris Troy, vocals It was remastered by John Wood at Abbey Road studios from the original 40 year old analogue master tapes.
