With Go Down Singin' Rice emerges as a spirit settling into a more philosophical place. Still

wildly committed to living wide open in pursuit of his dream and being the best man possible, there was only one title for this 11 - song cycle. Whether measuring the pitfalls and triumphs on the lean fiddle'n' harmony assessment of "Oh Tennessee, " the cascading acoustic guitar passage of simple wisdom from father to son in "Numbers, " or the smoky looking back at first loves in "Little Red Race Car, " there's a knowing appreciation for how he got here. In a voice sturdy as a retaining wall, Rice confesses, "I'm 38 now, and that's part of it. I've journaled since I was 15 years old, but there's something about being able to tell other people. I'm a deep person, but I don't know to show it in real life, so I'm trying to do it in my music." For me, 'Go Down Singin'is everything about where I am and what I want. I'm starting to see myself as who I want to be, not who I thought I should be. That's a good start. And I think a lot of men struggle with this stuff, too. "Getting honest, digging down, Rice shifted his approach. Working with Oscar Charles (Boy Named Banjo, Madeline Edwards, E lvie Shane), the pair worked to create a sound that was as honest, as real instrument grounded as the songs that were emerging. Written largely on guitars and piano, Go Down Singin' showed a man reckoning with growing up.

Childish Gambino - Atavista - Vinyl 2 LP

For years, Childish Gambino’s Atavista hid in plain sight. When he released an unfinished version of the record on March 15, 2020, it spent just 12 hours on his website before he pulled it down. Reappearing on streaming a week later as 3.15.20, the project brought up almost as many questions as sparkling neo-soul anthems, which still sounded slicker than the average as raw cuts titled after timestamps.

Atavista is an ode to impermanence, never more directly than over the glimmering guitar of “Time” with Grande. (“One thing’s for certain, baby/We’re running out of time,” they harmonize on the chorus.) But in Gambino’s capable hands, Atavista also slows down to enjoy the view, the sonic equivalent of a luxe leather-interior BMW cruising an open California highway. “I did what I wanted to,” he revels on closing track “Final Church.” Atavista took many shapes over the years to reach a final form. In each warm refrain, tight sequence, and carefully chosen collaborator, Gambino demonstrates why some things are worth waiting for.

Pink in Green Color-in-Color vinyl. Sweet Tooth, which arrives three years after Mom Jeans' second LP Puppy Love, was recorded in New Jersey at The Barber Shop Studios with producer Brett Romnes (The Front Bottoms, Oso Oso, Dogleg). Butler says it's the first time the band had a proper, top-to-bottom studio experience, which meant no cutting corners, and an ability to chase a previously-unattainable level of Polish. Tyler Povanda (Save Face) and Kory Gregory (Prince Daddy & the Hyena) contributed vocals to the record.

The music on Sweet Tooth marked a departure for Butler from his usual writing style. "I fell in love with bands like Modern Baseball and Front Bottoms and Joyce Manor, so I wanted to write songs like that," says Butler. "That's what our first two records were: me trying to stay in that box, cause I think that's where I felt comfortable." Sweet Tooth feels like an eternal dessert-before-dinner, a rejection of the idea that we need to suffer before we get to the good stuff. Herbie Hancock joins forces with musical icons Annie Lenox, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Santana, Sting and more, as his early aughts duet album Possibilities makes its vinyl debut. This Ruby Red 3LP set includes the original album, newly remastered, with four bonus tracks.

The brand-new album by David Gilmour, ‘Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman, with lyrics mostly written by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer for the past thirty years.

The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’, which sees Romany Gilmour, who performs backing vocals across the album, on vocals and harp.

Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards and the string and choral arrangements are by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 during a ‘Barn Jam’ at David’s house.
