AM was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton at Sage & Sound Recording, LA and Rancho de la Luna, Joshua Tree. The album was engineered by Ian Shea and mixed by Tchad Blake. Josh Homme, Pete Thomas and Bill Ryder-Jones all make guest appearances on AM as do the words of John Cooper Clarke, on the track "I Wanna Be Yours."

Arctic Monkeys’ 2007 sophomore album comes hurtling out of the gate with “Brianstorm,” which is also the first single. Immediately it is hard not to notice the scrappier but expansive new sound. While it is unmistakably Arctic Monkeys, everything’s a little more muscular and aggressive as the rhythm section of Matt Helders and Nick O’ Malley have locked horns with one another on the first new material since O’ Malley joined on full-time. It has been a long while since someone has been deserving of a “lead drums” credit, but Mr. Helders has indeed earned it here.

Each song is embedded with these revelatory moments, as if some sort of critical mass is achieved through skillful songcraft and sharp arrangements until an explosive release of energy or emotion is inevitable. Alex Turner’s lyrical voice has gained a steely directness that lies in contrast to the observational storytelling of the debut. One need look no further than the stunning “Do Me A Favour” for these attributes on clear display. And yes, it would be understandable if you were to think you’re picking up a bit of Smiths influence on that track with some fine self-deprecation worthy of Mr. S.P. Morrissey, but hey, that rhythm is just as much “Stranded In The Jungle” as it is “How Soon Is Now?” Go ask Bo Diddley.

If the debut was full of tales of Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, the sophomore album is one that realizes that there’s Monday and beyond, too. “Flourescent Adolescent,” certain to be a future single with its surefooted effervescence and pop sensibilities, is a story about the party girl growing up and out of the good times, perhaps against her will even. It also shows how far the band have come in their very short professional lives...one can hear the great detail that has been put into the arrangement and structure of the song, yet if feels completely effortless at the same time.

Arctic Monkeys made a sophomore album that does something that sophomore albums so rarely accomplish: they’ve knocked those very suppositions off balance, and in doing so, exceeded them. Produced by James Ford and Mike Crossey and mixed by Alan Moulder.

Unless your definition of success rests on how many private yachts you can afford, Arctic Monkeys were already massive way before they inked a deal with Domino in June 2005. People obsessing over the songs? Sold-out gigs full of stage-diving nutcases? Hardcore fans pressed up against venue windows, just hoping to catch a glimpse? Such checkpoints have all been ticked. So, here we are, standing at the precipice of something possibly really big, but it all almost doesn't matter because their debut album is so damn good.

The reference points are wide and varied. Musically, there's musical bits of The Stone Roses, What's The Story Morning Glory and Nevermind. As catchy as those reference points are, it's the lyrics that won the Arctic Monkeys such fiercely dedicated fans so quickly: a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and Ghost Town-era Specials.

Alex Turner’s reputation as a phrase-maker has been assured since the headlong rush of Arctic Monkeys’ early singles drove them to this, the fastest selling debut album of any British band in history. Opener "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon.

Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum" - a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs is tinted with sweet affection.
