An intimate and vulnerable emotional portrait that shows her grappling with a period of personal tumult, Whole New Mess presents Angel Olsen working through her open wounds and raw nerves with just a few guitars and some microphones, isolated in a century-old church in the Pacific Northwest. It follows All Mirrors, Olsen's grand 2019 masterpiece (and a top 10 critically acclaimed record). At least 9 of the 11 songs should sound familiar to anyone who has heard All Mirrors. "Lark," "Summer," "Chance" – they're all here, at least in some skeletal form and with slightly different titles. But these are not the demos for All Mirrors. Instead, Whole New Mess is its own record with its own immovable mood.

If the lavish orchestral arrangements and cinematic scope of All Mirrors are the sound of Olsen preparing her scars for the wider world to see, Whole New Mess is the sound of her first figuring out their shape, making sense for herself of these injuries. To record Whole New Mess, Olsen asked for a studio recommendation from Electro-Vox head engineer and a deep kindred spirit Michael Harris. She wanted to find a space where, as she puts it, "vulnerability exists." They settled on The Unknown, the Catholic church that Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum and producer Nicholas Wilbur converted into a recording studio in the small town of Anacortes, WA. Anacortes would act as a kind of harbor for Olsen, limiting distractions as she tried to burrow inside of these songs. 

The results are staggering, somehow disarmingly candid and dauntingly personal at once. The opening title track – one of two songs here that did not appear on All Mirrors – is a blunt appraisal of how low Olsen got and how hard the process of pulling herself back upright was, especially when being an artist can mean turning your emotions into someone else's entertainment. Considered alongside All Mirrors, Whole New Mess is a poignant and pointed reminder that songs are more than mere collections of words, chords, and even melodies. They are webs of moods and moments and ideas, qualities that can change from one month to the next and can say just as much as the perfect progression or an exquisite chord.

In that sense, these 11 songs – solitary, frank, and unflinching examinations of what it's like to love, lose, and survive – are entirely new. This is the sound of Angel Olsen, sorting through the kind of trouble we've all known, as if just for herself and whoever else needs it.

Legendary hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim first formed in Long Island, NY, in 1985. The premier DJ/MC team, not only was their chemistry superb, but individually, each represented the absolute state of the art in their respective skills. Between 1987 and 1992, they released four acclaimed albums, the platinum-selling Paid In Full (1987), Follow The Leader (1988), Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em (1990) and Don't Sweat The Technique (1992).

Paid In Full caused a stir in the hip-hop music world due to its novel sound, approach, and subject matter. Their songs were the first to really impart hip-hop music lyrics with a serious poetic device sensibility while their gritty, heavy, and dark beats, marked the beginning of heavy sampling in hip-hop records. As a disc jockey, Eric B. reinstated the art of live turntable mixing and his soul-filled sampling became influential in future hip hop production. The dynamic duo's unprecedented five-year run ended with their fourth and final album to date, Don't Sweat the Technique which found them going out on top with hip-hop masterpieces like the title cut, "The Punisher," "Casualties Of War," and Juice theme song "Know The Ledge."

Eric B. & Rakim reunited in 2017 for a string of one-off shows commemorating the 30th anniversary of Paid in Full. In 2018 they will undertake their first major tour together since their initial break up in 1993.

Vinyl LP pressing. After signing with Asylum Records in the early 1970s, Tom Waits recorded a series of acclaimed albums whose noir tales about the after-midnight underworld transformed the seedy into the sublime in songs laced with both dark humor and profound longing. Decades and several musical evolutions later, Waits' Asylum years still hold a special place in the hearts of many fans. Waits' first seven albums on Asylum have been remastered and will be re-released via Anti-Records. Released in 1980, Heartattack and Vine was Waits' final album on Elektra Asylum and it built on the raw blues approach of Blue Valentine with the incendiary title track, the funky, organ driven "Downtown" and the stomping NOLA blues of "Mr. Siegal." This album also contains some of Waits' most popular ballads, including "Jersey Girl" which was famously a hit for Bruce Springsteen. "On the Nickle" is a moving song about the homeless people who lived on 5th street in downtown LA, and "Ruby's Arms" is a beautiful song with a lovely Bach-like melody.

The second in a series of classic vinyl reissues featuring original artwork painstakingly restored and hot-stamped with gold foiling, Beneath The Shadows is the second studio album by the American hardcore punk band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), released in 1982 through Alternative Tentacles. With the addition of keyboardist Greg Kuehn to the lineup, the band moved away from punk rock in favor of a gothic rock sound in the vein of The Damned and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Although the album was critically well received, it was all too much for their hardcore punk fans at the time, and after an appearance playing live in Penelope Spheeris' 1984 film Suburbia, founding members Jack Grisham and Todd Barnes left the band and for the classic line-up it was all over until they reunited 16 years later.

Here was this most fascinating outgrowth of punk – they could've been our Damned or Siouxsie and the Banshees – retaining the original guts and drive, taking it into this unique direction. In the wake of his time leading The Healers, Marr’s solo career has given rise to three UK Top Ten albums - The Messenger (2013), Playland (2014) and 2018’s Call The Comet. He now returns with his most expansive work to date, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. It was created during the long, uncertain period that followed the arrival of the UK’s first lockdown, when his focus was pushed into both his interior life, and evoking the emotional states of others. “It’s an inspired record, and I couldn’t wait to get in and record every day,” he says. “But I had to go inwards.”

The new album reflects his multi-faceted past, but takes his music somewhere startlingly new. “There’s a set of influences and a very broad sound that I’ve been developing - really since getting out of The Smiths,” he says. “And I hear it in this record. There are so many strands of music in it. I think it’s the most ambitious solo record I’ve done.”
