Do Not Dare to Dream (IEX) (Indie Exclusive, Colored Vinyl, Orange)
Regular price $24.98 Save $-24.98Teenage Fanclub's Do Not Dare To Dream takes it's name from Norman Blake's "I Do Not Dare To Dream," an infectious anthemic song driven by ringing acoustic guitars, joined at the end by duelling electric guitars that wrap around each other like a reassuring hug. Blake says that the title is meant to mock those memes that urge people to "dare to dream," which to him are "kind of ridiculous... I don't think the world works that way."
Teenage Fanclub's 13th album is full of songs that are calmly resolute, taking stock of the fraught state of the world without succumbing to despair. Blake's warm, organ-washed midtempo ballad "Day In The Sun" and Raymond McGinley's "Over And Over" both speak to how everyone can find a renewed sense of purpose by opening their hearts. "We can still be cheerful and optimistic in the face of things not being great," McGinley says. "My parents' generation lived in Glasgow when there were bombs falling out of the sky. And here we are, however many years later. Things change." Blake and McGinley are joined on Do Not Dare To Dream by their bandmates Euros Childs (keyboards and vocals), Francis Macdonald (drums) and David McGowan (bass). This quintet has played together long enough now that neither of Teenage Fanclub's principal songwriters and guitarists feel the need to fuss over their songs or work up arrangements before they enter the studio. They'd rather wait for the rest of the group's input. The initial sessions took place over 14 days at Black Bay Studio, in the township of Kirkibost, on the Scottish Outer Hebrides island of Great Bernera. Teenage Fanclub likes to take advantage of what a studio has available to use, and at Black Bay the band found a Domus church organ (prominently heard on many songs, including "Over And Over") and a lot of different synthesizers. Euros Childs on keys brings a lot of sonic colour on this record, from the '70s sound of the Solina String Ensemble on "Tomorrow People" to the Mellotron flutes on McGinley's gently reflective "Take Time", and across every other song. Add to that the musicality of David McGowan's counterpoint melodies on bass and Francis Macdonald playing so freely and expressively on the drums and you can hear how it all adds up to the confident collective identity of the band that McGinley was talking about. As longtime fans are likely aware, Teenage Fanclub record each album in a new place so that they can let it's unique atmosphere influence the music. Great Bernera is their most remote recording location yet, which helped the band focus on the work but also put them in a place of awe, surrounded as they were by the crashing sea and ancient ruins. Blake recalls "not too far from the studio, on the adjacent island of Lewis, there's an ancient monument called the Callanish Stones, which is older than Stonehenge. The whole area is kind of magical." McGinley expands, "it's a place where they had a lot of Neolithic monuments. Later on it was a Viking area. And on our time off, we'd go see these things which are like, I don't know, 5000 years old. Some of us went for a walk every morning, 'round over the hills and stuff. I think all that plays into the feeling on the record, being in this kind of timeless landscape with connections to unknown civilizations from a long, long time ago. All those things that make you feel small, but in a good way." The result is a collection of songs suffused with the proper perspective of musicians who have been around for a while, recorded in a place that has been around even longer. As Blake puts it, "I think what happens is you just move from one thing into the next and before you know it, 30 years have passed. McGinley adds: "Yeah, it's been a while since we started doing this thing we do, but to us it feels like no time at all. In the place where we made the record people would have been singing thousands of years ago. Life is short, but music is eternal."

Still colorful, as Wolf tends to be, but from a more rooted & grounded place. The rawness with which Wolf wrote the album is delivered in the sound: stripped away of synths and programmed drums, Mud is Remi Wolf at her most lyrically and sonically vulnerable. The songs evoke the feeling of singing around a campfire with just your friends and a couple guitars because that's how it felt for Wolf to make it. But to find the clearing in the forest, she needed to make a whole new trail first.. EXPLICIT

Trompe Le Monde
Regular price $33.99 Save $-33.99Continuing the band's 40th anniversary celebrations, and hot on the heels of the first official vinyl pressing of their brilliant 4AD B-Sides compilation, Pixies are repressing studio albums Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991) on both black vinyl and CD. These represses feature newly remastered audio with engineer Kevin Vanbergen having returned to the band's original analogue tapes to deliver stunning new masters that excitingly reveal more layers to these much-loved records.
Trompe le Monde bookended a golden run of landmark records released in quick succession that cemented Pixies as one of the best of a generation. Translated from French to mean "fool the world", Trompe le Monde showed the band still restless to push their sound forward. With producer Gil Norton again at the controls, their fourth album is arguably their most playful with Black Francis's lyrics on UFOs and conspiracy theories keeping things weird while power pop creeps in to amplify the space rock established on predecessor Bossanova. Trompe le Monde goes full throttle with 15 tracks coming in a quickfire 40-minute salvo. It proved to be the end of act one for the band with them taking over a decade before returning to stage together.

Bossanova is the third Pixies album. The band continued to work with Gil Norton after collaborating to such success on their platinum-selling second album Doolittle. Their third album in as many years, 1990 was a particularly fertile time for the band with Kim Deal also having success with The Breeders, who released their debut album Pod just a few months prior. Featuring the singles 'Allison' (a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison), 'Dig For Fire' and 'Velouria', plus the first cover to feature on one of their albums 'Cecilia Ann' (originally by The Surftones), Bossanova showed a less primal side to the band, with surf and space rock rising to the fore. Lyrically, Black Francis is even more cryptic with a recurring sci-fi theme running throughout, which in turn influenced Vaughan Oliver's classic planet design for the sleeve.

Emotional Creature - CD
Regular price $15.99 Save $-15.99Emotional Creature - Beach Bunny - As lockdown approached in 2020, Chicago-based singer Lili Trifilio was wrapping up a tour in support of Beach Bunny's debut album, Honeymoon. Suddenly, she found herself back at her parents' house, coping with her new reality. To deal, she retreated into sci-fi stories and her always-active imagination. She envisioned new places to travel in her mind, thus dreaming up big, bombastic pop sounds to construct Beach Bunny's highly anticipated sophomore album, Emotional Creature. Simultaneously about personal growth, Emotional Creature is a collection of highly relatable songs that capture the highs and lows of new relationships, the joys and vulnerabilities of letting someone in, the gut-wrenching realities of experiencing anxiety, leaving toxic relationships, and seeing yourself through the eyes of the one you love. These complex feelings are expertly contrasted with ultra-poppy melodies, anthemic choruses, and a slight punk edge. 'The songs have grown with me over time,' Trifilio explains. 'Some of them were written in various stages of life, and I think as we go through different experiences and hardships, you come out stronger. I've grown as a person, so the songwriting reflects that.' With it's openhearted, vulnerable themes and progressive, hook-filled take on pop rock and pop punk, Emotional Creature only further cements Beach Bunny and Trifilio's well-earned reputation as a leading voice of their generation.
