Bill Withers Greatest Hits
Regular price $24.98 Save $-24.98The antithesis of the sweaty R&B shouter that prowled the edge of stages, Bill Withers dealt in mellow, downhome-styled soul and emotional vulnerability, qualities that come to the fore on his seminal 1981 Greatest Hits collection. Evidence of Withers' crossover appeal is found not only via his chart successes on both the pop and R&B charts, but in the DNA of his best work. There's not one forgettable moment on Greatest Hits.
Classics like the Grammy-winning "Ain't No Sunshine" and devotional "Grandma's Hands," showcase the vocalist's incredible breath control, folksy drawl, and restrained phrasing. They also indicate his penchant for converting biographical experience into eminently catchy combinations of pop, gospel, blues, and soul. "Use Me" rides a riveting clarinet riff and urban tempo to express the double-edged feelings associated with an edgy relationship.
On the loping "Who Is He (And What Is He to You?)," Withers again splits the bitter and sweet. For the Latin-tinged "Lovely Day," Withers holds a single note for a whopping 18 seconds. And with "Lean on Me," the West Virginian created a timeless masterpiece that stands tall in the American songbook.

Following an unprecedented run of influential albums like Daydream Nation (1988), Goo (1990) and Dirty (1992) which marked Sonic Youth's ascent to becoming America's pre-eminent alternative band, the group issued Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star in 1994, an uncompromising record impacted as much by touring with acts like Royal Trux, Sebadoh and Pavement as contemporaries like Nirvana and Mudhoney had swayed the sound of its predecessors.
Produced by Butch Vig yet as stripped down as ever, Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star saw the band simultaneously evolving and yearning for their pre-grunge art band days and less expectations, still just as interested in making remarkable underground sounds as songs with commercial appeal. Thurston Moore explained its synthesis, "The idea this time was to cut as much of it live as we could, and not labor over polishing and overdubbing in the usual big-rock manner, and that's basically what went down."

High 'n' Dry
Regular price $29.98 Save $-29.98180g Vinyl LP Reissue Remastered by the Band's Long Serving Sound Engineer Ronan McHugh!
Def Leppard's exuberant 1980 debut, On Through The Night, showed great promise and yielded unexpected UK Top 20 success, but its accomplished 1981 follow-up, High 'n' Dry, banished any lingering doubts that these resilient Yorkshiremen were in it for the long haul. It found the quintet turning to a new producer, South African-born Robert John "Mutt" Lange, whose credits included The Boomtown Rats, The Motors and AC/DC's influential, multi-platinum-selling Back In Black. Known for his meticulous approach to his craft, Lange's input would have a significant effect on the course of Def Leppard's career.
High 'n' Dry proved to be the record where Def Leppard's distinctive, arena-slaying sound first materialized. Their new-found confidence and verve was apparent, whether they were piling into high-octane anthems ("Let It Go," "You Got Me Runnin'," "On Through The Night") or mastering complex set-pieces such as the edgy "Another Hit And Run" and the beautifully crafted, widescreen ballad "Bringin' On The Heartbreak," which segued into an ambitious "Layla"-esque instrumental coda, "Switch 625."
Housed in an enigmatic sleeve designed by Hipgnosis artist Storm Thorgerson, High 'n' Dry again broached the UK Top 30, but the care and attention Lange and the band lavished on "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" also rewarded them with their first taste of mass appeal in the US. The album subsequently peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200, offering Def Leppard a glimpse of the sustained mainstream success they would experience with 1983's diamond-selling Pyromania.
"Making [High'n'Dry] was an enormous learning curve, but it sounded punchy and professional and, generally speaking, it was the start of where we wanted to go," Elliott told Blabbermouth. "We were open-minded and so happy to be working with a producer like Mutt Lange. By the time we started doing Pyromania a year later, what we'd gone through recording High 'n' Dry had sunk in and we'd realised it was worth all the effort."

Van Halen II

Van Halen set quite a precedent with its self-titled 1978 debut, one of the most landscape-shifting albums ever released. How does a band follow something like that? By making a record that's even better. And hard rock tour de force Van Halen II surely fits the bill. Granted, by the time this sophomore set appeared in late 1979, the world had already been introduced to Eddie Van Halen's pyrotechnic guitar skills and trick bag of jaw-dropping solos. And everyone knew about David Lee Roth's flamboyant singing, oversexed machismo, and vaudeville antics.
But the quartet ups the quotient level throughout the mighty Van Halen II, which swaggers to a flawless batch of songs and phenomenal playing. There's not a weak moment or note here. Moreover, as Eddie consistently delivers searing fills, acrobatic leads, and gravity-defying phrasings, Roth steps it up a notch, inserting himself in the role of the come-hither vocalist whose self-aware humor balances his glammed-up, spandex-clad, riser-leaping persona.
Once again proving themselves deft with their choice of covers (the lead-off "You're No Good"), Van Halen turns up the heat throughout, celebrating cheap and carefree sleaze, booze-soaked good times, and yes, the band's perennial favorite subject, women. Highlights include "Beautiful Girls," "Spanish Fly" and the Top 20 single "Dance the Night Away."

Golden Hour
Regular price $35.99 Save $-35.994x 2019 Grammy Award Winner for Album of the Year, Best Country Album, Best County Solo Performance ("Butterflies") & Best Country Song ("Space Cowboy")!
Co-produced and co-written by Kacey Musgraves with Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, the 4x Grammy Award-winning Golden Hour is the country/pop singer-songwriter's most intimate to date, featuring the genre transcendent hit singles "Butterflies," "Space Cowboy" and "High Horse." Recorded at Sheryl Crow's Nashville, TN studio, Musgraves told EW that the critically acclaimed LP has a "trippy twist" and cited "the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young as influences" as well as her recent marriage to fellow musician Ruston Kelly.
"I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us," she says of the album's theme. "None of the masks are solely us, but they're all us. On this record, there's the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that's missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser – they're all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole."
Golden Hour was the big winner at the 2019 Grammy Awards taking home hardware for Album of the Year, Best Country Album, Best County Solo Performance ("Butterflies") and Best Country Song ("Space Cowboy"). Graceland-25th Anniversary

Eclectic Multi-Grammy-Winning Effort Remastered on 180g Vinyl and Pressed at RTI for Audiophile Sound: Graceland Forever Changed the Relationship Between Pop and World Music
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavored rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech.
An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subsequent musical experiments by major artists were measured and continues to provide rewards to its listeners and remains a pivotal listening experience for writers, artists and fans.
The universal appeal of the music of Graceland proved more powerful and enduring than the political hotbed attending its creation. In 1986, the album sold 14 million copies worldwide, and received universal praise from critics around the globe. Paul Simon and the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed on Saturday Night Live and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
By January of 1987, "You Can Call Me Al" was everywhere and Graceland won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammy Awards in 1987. Then, in an unprecedented carryover, the album garnered the Grammy for 'Song of the Year' with its title track in 1988. The album generated three hit singles and kept Simon and the Graceland tour on the road for five years.
This audiophile edition of Graceland has been remastered on 180g 12" vinyl and includes an art-quality collectible poster and a download card with the full album plus three bonus tracks.
"In many ways, Graceland was the most extraordinary experience in my entire career," notes Simon. "The insight into rhythm was the great gift that I received from making the trip to South Africa, and collaborating with African musicians."
"This lacquer cut processed and pressed at RTI on 180 gram vinyl sounds dramatically superior to the original in every way. The overall tonal balance is far superior. The low bass is as powerful as on the original but much better controlled. If the opening drum thwacks on 'Boy In the Bubble,' don't sound deep, ultra-tight and tuneful, blame your system, not the record. You are guaranteed to hear heretofore hidden musical details and parts that on the original slipped through the musical cracks. This reissue has an overall tonal richness and clarity as well as dynamic impact only hinted at on the original."

Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
Regular price $31.99 Save $-31.99Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? is the second studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on September 19, 1986. The project was originally handled by Combat Records, resulting in the first mix of the album being co-produced by Randy Burns. Capitol Records then bought the rights to the album and hired another producer, Paul Lani, to mix it himself. The album's front cover, featuring the band's mascot Vic Rattlehead, was created by Ed Repka. The recording of the album was difficult for the band because of the ongoing drug issues the members had at the time. This was the last Megadeth album to feature drummer Gar Samuelson and guitarist Chris Poland, who were fired shortly after the album's promotional tour. The title track, noted for it's politically conscious lyrics, was released as the album's lead single. Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? is regarded as a thrash metal classic and as an album that gave prominence to extreme metal. It has been featured in several publications' best album lists, including Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and Martin Popoff's Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time. The album has been reissued several times over the years. In 2004, the album was remixed and remastered by Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine, with extensive liner notes detailing the album's background. In 2011, the three different versions were reissued as part of the album's 25th anniversary celebration. All of them, with the exception of the 2004 mixes, feature new remastering.

The Ramones sounded like nothing else when their self-titled debut came roaring onto the scene in 1976. Even so, original drummer Tommy Ramone did do a pretty good job describing the band's primal sound when he penned the quartet's press bio that same year. "The Ramones all originate from Forest Hills and kids who grew up there either became musicians, degenerates or dentists. The Ramones are a little of each," he observed. "Their sound is not unlike a fast drill on a rear molar."
Named the "Greatest Punk Album Of All Time" by Rolling Stone, and certainly one of the most important and influential albums of all time, the 29-minute masterpiece helped launch the punk rock scenes in both America and Britain, and also went on to inspire countless other artists for generations to come. Bringing a bubblegum sensibility to the fast-and-hard mentality, their primal sound is considered a blueprint for all things resembling snotty, catchy, ear-bleeding punk rock.
And with cornerstone anthems like "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Beat on the Brat," "Judy Is A Punk" and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" as its first four songs alone, Ramones stature and supremacy is hard to argue.
