Boygenius
Regular price $26.98 Save $-26.98Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus formed Boygenius after booking a tour together, but the trio had subconsciously been in the works for longer than that. Through a series of tours and performances and chance encounters that led to friendships – including Bridgers' and Dacus' first in-person meeting backstage at a Philadelphia festival, greenroom hangouts that felt instantly comfortable, and a couple of long email chains – the lyrically and musically arresting singer-songwriters and kindred spirits got to know each other on their own terms. With gut-wrenchingly personal yet easily relatable verses and spare, lilting melodic arrangements, all three are leading a new rock vanguard that values unflinching self-awareness and unassailable songcraft. Baker's slow builds and taut vocals add urgency to "Souvenir" and "Stay Down," while album opener "Bite the Hand" roils with slow-burning layers of guitar as Dacus stands in her devastating truth: "I can't love you like you want me to." The Bridgers-architected "Me & My Dog" chugs into view with a deceptively simple open-road riff and Bridgers' insistent recounting of a relationship that couldn't help but fall apart.

Jolene
Regular price $26.98 Save $-26.98Vinyl LP Reissue of Long Out of Print 1974 Dolly Parton Masterwork Jolene!
The Bob Ferguson-produced Jolene, recorded in 1972 and '73 in Nashville with the musical mecca's finest sessions musicians, is filled not only with richly tuneful songs, but a pair of numbers - "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" - that topped the Country charts and remain Dolly Parton signatures to this very day. The oft covered title track tells the tale of a housewife confronting her husband's seductress while "I Will Always Love You" covers the professional breakup of Parton and her longtime duet partner Potter Wagoner (who contributed the aching "Lonely Comin' Down" here). In 1992 Whitney Houston made the latter an international pop smash. Jolene had more than a little to do with elevating Dolly Parton to the next level of solo stardom, now the most-decorated female country music performer of all time.

When I Get Home (Clear)
Regular price $26.98 Save $-26.98When I Get Home represents the next phase in Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Solange's evolution as an artist following the release of her critically acclaimed 2016 album A Seat at the Table. Written, performed, and executive produced by Solange, When I Get Home is an exploration of origin. It asks the question how much of ourselves do we bring with us versus leave behind in our evolution. The artist returned to Third Ward Houston to answer this. The album includes contributions from Tyler, the Creator, Chassol, Playboi Carti, Standing on the Corner, Panda Bear, Devin the Dude, The-Dream, and more. It also features samples from Third Ward's own Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, poet Pat Parker, and Scarface.
"Solange's breakthrough 2016 album, A Seat at the Table, was a sweet-voiced, multilayered manifesto: the sound of one black woman finding her path forward and confronting the ways systemic racism and sexism affect personal struggles. Its successor, When I Get Home, is something different: a reverie, a meditation, a therapeutic retreat, a musicians' playground." - The New York Times
"Solange's growth as an artist has been one of music's most fascinating stories, and, like A Seat at the Table, When I Get Home serves as a thrilling reminder that this is just the beginning of the futures she still has yet to unpack. If she can make a party-friendly album so meaningful, we've barely even witnessed the tip of her vision." - Rolling Stone
"When I Get Home reminds us that she's a frontrunner of R&B in her own right. With soothing production, enveloped with numbing vocals, she leaves you in a state of utopia. This surprise album of 2019 was something we didn't know we needed." - NME

Al Green-Greatest Hits
Regular price $27.98 Save $-27.98Al Green Greatest Hits on 180g LP!
Al Green was the first great soul singer of the '70s and arguably the last great Southern soul singer. With his seductive singles for Hi Records in the early '70s, Green bridged the gap between deep soul and smooth Philadelphia soul. He incorporated elements of gospel, interjecting his performances with wild moans and wails, but his records were stylish, boasting immaculate productions that rolled along with a tight beat, sexy backing vocals, and lush strings. The distinctive Hi Records sound that the vocalist and producer Willie Mitchell developed made Al Green the most popular and influential soul singer of the early '70s. Greatest Hits epitomizes that trademark sound with 10 of the R&B legends' all-time classics.
"The honey-voiced Green made some of the most visionary soul music of the Seventies." - Rolling Stone

Houdini

Music Industry, 1993: everyone is looking to sign the "next" Nirvana. Atlantic Records found exactly the band they were looking for in the Melvins. Birthed in the Pacific Northwest gloom of Aberdeen that would spawn grunge music and culture, the Melvins were writing songs that were clearly inspired by the right stuff and written for the right people...and they had Nirvana's unequivocal stamp of approval, which meant everything in the early 90's.
For the next four years after their signing, the Melvins would deliver three stellar, influential albums that were criminally only moderately appreciated at the time. In the past 23 years, they've continued onwards with Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and a revolving cast of bassists at the helm, cementing themselves as one of the most important American rock bands of all time.
Houdini, Stoner Witch, and Stag have all been out of print on vinyl for over two decades and original copies can command into the three figures in back alley craps games. Third Man Records is proud to reintroduce these titles to the hungry vinyl-buying public, all remastered from original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and given the deluxe, gatefold jacket treatment.
The Melvins' fifth album Houdini was a conscious attempt by the band to make a record that wouldn't alienate their fans but that the band members themselves would also enjoy. Their best-selling release by a country-mile, this album crested at number 29 on on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Houdini would be most folks introduction to the band and songs like "Honeybucket" received MTV airplay.

In the late 80's the Gin Blossoms indelible jangle-pop sound was evolving during radio's diverse mix of hair bands and grunge music. Taking their name from a caption on a W.C. Fields photo, Gin Blossoms hit the big time with their 1992 album New Miserable Experience. It kept the band on the charts for almost three years with singles "Hey Jealousy," "Allison Road," "Until I Fall Away," "Mrs Rita," and "Found Out About You." New Miserable Experience took the airwaves by siege and held MTV hostage in the process, rocketing the band into the mainstream and going on to sell over 4 million copies.
1996 saw the final record of the decade for Gin Blossoms Congratulations I'm Sorry. The album brought two more hits; "Follow You Down" which spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and "As Long As It Matters" which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group. The album broke into Billboard's Top Ten and a year of touring helped push the record past 1,500,000 in sales. In 5 years, the band released 2 EP's, 2 LP's and over 12 singles that fueled record sales to over 7 million. Their blend of pop & rock, now known as Jangle-Pop, became a musical force that helped define the sound of 90's radio.

Originally issued in 1996, From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah features 16 live Nirvana songs recorded between 1989 and 1994, from Seattle, WA to Springfield, MA, from London to Amsterdam, in venues ranging from small American clubs to the Reading Festival in England. "It's an aggressive record," said Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who along with drummer Dave Grohl listened to more than a hundred hours of tapes to select the tracks. "Hopefully people who didn't get to see us live will get a flavor of what the band was all about. Most of the songs we chose were ones we played every night."
If the previous live Nirvana live album, MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) documented the acoustic side of the band - "Nirvana lite," as Novoselic puts it - then From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah is "Nirvana raw." Two tracks on the album pre-date the band's breakthrough album Nevermind as "Polly" and "Breed" were both recorded in London in December 1989. The majority, however, come from the band's world tour in the winter of 1991 including "Drain You," "Aneurysm," and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Sources for the tracks range from soundboard reference cassettes to 24-track recordings. The album was mixed by Andy Wallace.
