Limited translucent gold colored vinyl LP pressing. Charlie Gabriel's first professional gig dates to 1943, sitting in for his father in New Orleans' Eureka Brass Band. As a teenager living in Detroit, Charlie played with Lionel Hampton, whose band then included a young Charles Mingus, later spending nine years with a group led by Cab Calloway drummer J.C. Heard. While he's also fronted a bebop quintet, played and/or toured with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet, Aretha Franklin and many more, this is the first time his name appears on the front of a record, as a bandleader. Since 2006, Gabriel has been a member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Eighty Nine was different, and not simply due to a smaller ensemble. "We had no particular plan, or any particular insight on what we were gonna do. But we were enjoying what we were doing, jamming, having a musical conversation," Charlie says, further musing, "Musical conversations cancel out complications." Eighty Nine includes six standards and three newer pieces on which Gabriel is a writer: "Yellow Moon," "The Darker It Gets" and "I Get Jealous." The record also marks Charlie's return to his first instrument, clarinet, on many of the tracks.

With his first new album in 36 years, Reboot, Ronnie Foster returns to Blue Note Records 50 years after releasing his debut album, Two Headed Freap, on the label in 1972. Reboot is a collection of originals and covers that mark a fresh start for Foster who has whipped up an omnidirectional brew of Hammond Organ grooves that pay homage to the past but more often reflect Ronnie's restlessness for ushering in the new. The album is dedicated to the memory of his longtime friend Dr. Lonnie Smith.

On January 27th, 1990, Helmet entered the stage of New York’s equally famous and infamous CBGB’s. What followed was an explosive live show, set during the earliest days of the band’s career. Getting ready to release their debut album 'Strap It On' in March that year, Helmet propelled themselves through a staccato-heavy set of tracks that would soon earn them worldwide acclaim in the Punk scene.

The first side of this brand-new live album features the CBGB’s set for the first time ever on vinyl and CD, while the second half contains an equally energetic performance, recorded in 1993 at the Big Day Out Festival in Melbourne, Australia. Finally, rappers who aren't afraid of actually sticking out from the crowd and saying something new, and who embody the classic quote from Run of Run-DMC that, "The only thing rap music is – there is no music to rap. We just rap over whatever we want."

The album's lead single, "From the Floor" shows off Vonne and Dre's talents to organically connect disparate influences, fusing icy UK drum & bass breaks with Miami bass bounce, layering on Dirty-South-mixtape-style raps, and dousing the whole thing in spacy psychedelia worthy of Can. "Blatant Localism" spotlights the pair's verbal teamwork, as they trade lines taking aim at style-deficient hypebeast rappers over a pixelated beat, landing on something like turn-of-the-millennium IDM, but with a lot more shit talk. The coolly frenetic "X-Ray Spex" infuses jungle with propulsive synthesizer ambience. And they're as daring with their lyrics as they are with their beats: on "Little Brother," Dre draws an emotionally complex portrait of the hood economics other rappers shallowly glamorize, while "Some Days I Hate My Voice" is Vonne's speaker-knocking ode to androgynous gender euphoria, complete with shout-outs to 100 gecs and 60's trans soul star Jackie Shane.

Finally, New is what a truly post-genre musical landscape is supposed to be: building deep connections that transcend outdated distinctions between them, spilling over with the joy of exploration and possibility, and daring other artists to think broader, go deeper, take bigger risks. Let the rest of them keep playing by the old rules – They Hate Change will keep changing the game.

Ty Segall meets a new non-rock challenge head-on; soundtrack music for the documentary film Whirlybird. A variety of synth sounds, electric keyboards, drums, percussion and saxophone (and yeah, a few guitars) form a shifting impressionist counterpart, instrumental music that dialogues with and serves to frame the film’s compulsive themes and images.

For Mike Campbell, External Combustion – the second album by his first band as a leader, The Dirty Knobs – is proof that lightning can strike twice. The follow-up to their 2020 debut Wreckless Abandon beats a new set of odds and jumps ahead in vision and drive, proving the first record was no one-shot deal. Campbell experienced all of the above and more with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – riding shotgun with his friend and captain as lead guitarist, co-producer, and, at times, co-writer – when he met guitarist Jason Sinay at a session in Los Angeles in 2000. Once Lance Morrison joined in on bass and Matt Laug on drums, that turned into The Dirty Knobs, named after a faulty amp dial.

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of iconic Dutch jazz label Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing a series that features albums that are part of the Timeless Records legacy and will be released mainly throughout 2022.

Part of this series is Pharoah Sanders' Moon Child from 1990, which bookended a decade of musical soul searching for Sanders. The acclaimed free jazz player is known to have a raw and abrasive sound, but reinvented himself on this album as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful deliberations. Moon Child is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on it's title track. The record was co-written with Horace Silver, George Gershwin and Abdullah Ibrahim and recorded with William Henderson, Stafford James, Eddie Moore and Cheikh Tidiane Fall. Moon Child is available on black vinyl.

Wildness, Snow Patrol's first album in seven years, finds the British alt-rockers reuniting with longtime producer Jackknife Lee and searching for clarity, connection, and meaning, while staying true to the melodic songwriting prowess that brought them to prominence. The extended break proved to be a source of inspiration for the band and the new record, true to its title, taps into something raw and primitive.

Lead-singer/songwriter Gary Lightbody explains, "There are many types of wildness, but I think it can be distilled into two: the wildness of the modern age, all it's confusion, illogic and alienation and a more ancient wildness. Double 180gm audiophile vinyl LP pressing. 2Pacalypse Now is the 1991 debut studio album by 2Pac. The album is 2Pac's commentary on contemporary social issues facing American society such as racism, police brutality, poverty, black on black crime, and teenage pregnancy. It featured three singles; "Brenda's Got a Baby", "Trapped", and "If My Homie Calls". The album was initially released on T.N.T. Recordings and Interscope Records, which at the time was distributed through Eastwest Records America and Atlantic Records. Following Shakur's death, Amaru Entertainment (established by his mother Afeni Shakur) obtained the rights to this album. The album generated significant controversy stemming from then-U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle's public criticism after Ronald Ray Howard murdered a Texas state trooper and his defense attorney claimed he was influenced by 2Pacalypse Now and it's strong theme of police brutality. Quayle made the statement, "There's no reason for a record like this to be released. It has no place in our society."

Way back in October 2013, The Dead Weather and Third Man Records announced an incredibly special 7" featuring "Open Up (That's Enough)" b/w "Rough Detective" as part of Vault Package #18. These two tracks were a fierce battle cry heralding the announcement of a brand new Dead Weather album that was to be released in a revolutionary fashion. Teased out over the past year and a half via a series of 7" singles, the physical versions of which were ONLY available via The Vault (Third Man's one-of-a-kind subscription mail-order service), the band promised this would culminate in a brand new album in 2015.

The third Dead Weather LP would be a full length album comprised not only of the previously released 7" singles, but newly recorded, previously-unheard material. Now The Dead Weather officially present their new album Dodge & Burn. The 12-track set will be released worldwide in September 2015 on Third Man Records and will feature eight brand new songs, along with the four previously released tracks remixed and remastered.

Whalen Nash is a folk singer-songwriter who divides his time between Austin, Texas and Baltimore, Maryland. He performs at Open Mics in both of those cities and many others on the road between them.

Singer/songwriter Ben E. King personified artistic excellence. In the words of Ahmet Ertegun, "Ben E. King is one of the greatest singers in the history of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. His style and the tempo of his voice have a magic all their own." Interpol follows-up 2014's El Pintor with their sixth studio album, Marauder. For the first time since 2007's Our Love to Admire, the band has opened themselves up to the input of a producer. For two-week spells between December of 2017 to April of 2018, they traveled to upstate New York to work with Dave Fridmann – famed for recording with Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, MGMT, Spoon, Mogwai, and countless more.

In the run up to writing and recording, Sam Fogarino found himself immersed in soul drummers such as Al Jackson Jr (Otis Redding's drummer) and 80's funk producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. "How can I make shit swing?" was the question Sam repeatedly asked himself, and the answer is in the striding gallop of opener "If You Really Love Nothing," the embellished skip ‘n' bounce of "Stay in Touch" and the R&B swagger of closer "It Probably Matters." Interpol have always been world-beaters at creating a feeling, but Marauder is where the feel is just as crucial.

Paul Banks may have stepped out of the shadows as a bassist, but he steps into an even brighter light as a songwriter here. During Interpol's previous albums, the singer largely kept himself out of his own work, preferring to fill his lyrics with detached thoughts, characters, and observations, often phrased in abstract. But more than 20 years on since forming at NYU, the frontman is finally allowing himself to play a role in his own stories. 

"Marauder is a facet of myself," he explains. "That's the guy that fucks up friendships and does crazy shit. He taught me a lot, but it's representative of a persona that's best left in song. In a way, this album is like giving him a name and putting him to bed."

PSA is the full-length debut album from Houston-based singer Peyton. Radiating confidence and self-love, PSA sees Peyton standing in the spotlight and making herself heard. Throughout the 12-track album, listeners are taken inside the reflective world of a young woman's attempt to comprehend love, friendship, and life itself. "Everything I'm singing feels like my thoughts are pouring out boldly to the world," she says. Peyton began writing PSA in 2018, then worked with several producers including Biako, Jay Anthony, Vicky Farewell, Julia Lewis and Keys & Krates, to bring her vision to life. The album's opening track "What Did I Do" puts a positive spin on her break-up with a close friend; "Don't U Wanna Fly" is a reminder to see the beauty in child-like simplicity; "Let It Flow" is about trusting your intuition, and "Perfect Peach" is a song about innocent love. The album closes with Peyton's cover of "Pure Imagination" – originally sung by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory – a song that draws on PSA's themes of youthful hope and continual creativity.
