Amidst a world of calculating contest winners, manufactured show ponies and cheap knock offs - Lorde is a true original. She is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, born and raised on Auckland’s North Shore, and possessed of a singular ability to capture the majesty, and mundanity, of teenage life - in striking melodic snapshots that belie her age and experience.

Raised on a nutritious musical diet of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Smiths and Nick Drake, alongside a smattering of soul food from the likes of Etta James and Otis Redding, Ella was definitely set off on strong melodic footing. Before any of that success, she was already the focus of a hotly contested bidding war, rapidly being signed up for the UK, US and other major territories, simply on the strength of her music and blindingly obvious potential alone. Tweeted about by everyone from Grimes to Sky Ferreira to Doomtree, and picked up by Buzzfeed, Perez Hilton et al - these are the beginnings of an impending roar, about an artist who is quite simply, cut from a different cloth.

Like most overnight success stories, the reality is considerably less glamorous, and more lengthy and involved. Working with Universal for three years prior to The Love Club EP, the sparks really started flying when she collaborated with producer and songwriter, Joel Little. In him she found someone who could really help in getting the songs out of her head and into yours, and a willing accomplice when she needs to spend the best part of a day making a hi hat sound more like an insect, or suchlike.

With a mother who is a celebrated poet herself, Ella was given an early grounding in the essentials from the likes of T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Allan Ginsberg, Raymond Carver and Sylvia Plath. That combination of higher thought and word passion, taken with visual influences ranging from The Sopranos and Brick, through to Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, makes for a heady combination - but it’s what Ella does with it all that is truly unique.

Rejecting the trite banalities that are usually presumed to represent a 16 year old’s outlook, the music of Lorde manages to capture the very essence of the frustration and freedom, the curiosity and confidence, and the plain old wonder of teenage life, in a truly unique way. In keeping with the quality of their magical, laconic music, the success of Mazzy Star's second album, So Tonight That I Might See seemingly came out of nowhere. Eventually going platinum, the record's unexpected climb to commercial prominence began on the back of the surprise success of its second single, the dreamily atmospheric "Fade Into You," which rose into the Billboard Top 50 seven months after its parent album first hit the racks in October 1993. Gloriously out of step with the zeitgeist, the introspective So Tonight That I Might See bore scant relation to the grungy guitar records dominating the alt-rock scene. Indeed, "Fade Into You" ironically began its steady ascent up the Billboard chart while the world mourned the death of Kurt Cobain.

The product of ad hoc studio sessions, So Tonight That I Might See made no attempt to hide its rough 'n' ready nature, with "She's My Baby" and the grinding, "Venus In Furs"-esque titular song sounding almost willfully loose. More often than not, however, the album nonchalantly sauntered towards genius, not least on the droning, acid-tinged "Mary Of Silence," the duo's skeletal, cello-enhanced cover of Arthur Lee's "Five String Serenade" and the strung-out blues-rock of the aptly-titled "Wasted."

The record initially sold modestly, despite attracting tuned-in critics such as Los Angeles Times' Steve Hochman, who enthusiastically proclaimed that it "may well be the best psychedelic blues album since Cream." However, just when observers were preparing to file it away as a slow-burning niche record, So Tonight That I Might See started its stealthy ascent up the Billboard chart, peaking at No. 36 and moving a million copies. Now available as a single LP on standard weight vinyl in celebration of Capitol Records' 75th anniversary.

Modern Baseball was formed in 2011 by friends and guitarists Jacob Ewald and Brendan Lukens, who were soon joined by Ian Farmer on bass and Sean Huber on drums. The band self-released their first EP The Nameless Ranger in 2011 while still in high school. Shortly after the members relocated to Philadelphia to attend college and quickly gained a strong following in the Philadelphia music community, teaming up with locals Marietta to release the Couples Therapy split in the spring of 2012. Modern Baseball released their debut full-length Sports later that year on Lame-O Records, which they self-recorded and produced.

After spending the summer of 2013 touring heavily across the US, the band headed into Studio A in Philadelphia to self-record You're Going to Miss It All. Her debut album is co-produced by Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Maximo Park), James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow Puppets) and Steve Mackay (PULP, M.I.A), and has already amassed a hefty amount of critical acclaim in the UK. Lungs is made of harps, choirs, drums, quartets, strange electronic wailing, while incorporating countless other instruments and emotions along the way.

The songs are full of Gothic imagery and fairytale flights of fantasy. Her seven-piece band includes long-term collaborators; Rob Ackroyd (guitar), Chris Hayden (drums), Isabella Summers (keyboards) and Tom Monger (harp). Lungs was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize as one of the 12 best albums to be released in the UK this year.
