The Verve - "This Is Music: The Singles" [2xLP] This is Music: The Singles, is a compilation album by English alternative rock band The Verve, featuring Richard Ashcroft (vocals), Pete Salisbury (drums), Simon Jones (bass) and Nick McCabe (guitar). Originally released in November 2004, it featured two bonus tracks pulled from the sessions for their third album Urban Hymns, "This Could Be My Moment" and "Monte Carlo." 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of an album that has never been pressed on vinyl. Under the group's direction, this long overdue reissue replaces the bonus tracks with the powerful singles from the band's 2008 reunion album, Forth - "Love Is Noise" and "Rather Be" - as well as their second single, "She's A Superstar" (1992) in it's original, full-length, eight-and-a-half-minute form (rather than the five-minute edit). In the quarter century since he founded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has created some of the era’s signature songs, albums and styles. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of bands such as Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, the Fog, Witch, and Sweet Apple. He has also guested on innumerable sessions. But Several Shades of Why, recorded at Amherst, Massachusetts’ Bisquiteen Studios, is J’s first solo studio record, and it is an album of incredible beauty, performed with a delicacy not always associated with his work.

Nearly all acoustic, Several Shades of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees).

Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriters. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure.

Geese is a band that begins and ends in Brooklyn, as a project between friends to build a home studio out of a basement. Their songs are born from the same ambition: make music by any means necessary. They began recording together with sneakers as mic stands and blankets draped over the amps, all within the afternoon following a school day, up until they ran the risk of noise complaints. Recently, they signed a record deal, so they are thinking about moving on from sneaker-laden mics and blanketed amps, but their musical ethos has not changed a bit. MPLS Unplugged celebrates the 30th anniversary of the band's legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, recorded live nearly 30 years later to the day at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on April 20, 2023. For the first time in decades, the band is captured stripped back and unplugged-echoing the spirit of their original MTV Unplugged session in 1993-while remaining deeply layered, expansive in feel, and emotionally resonant. Frontman Dave Pirner, is joined by guitarist Ryan Smith, bassist Jeremy Tapparo and drummer Michael Bland. Also returning is Ivan Neville on keys, alongside STRINGenius string quartet and the Robert Robinson gospel singers, honoring the lineup of the original 1993 session while modernizing the acoustic arrangements. Neville's connection to the band dates back to that original Unplugged session, where, as Pirner recalls, "he was the obvious choice... pretty magical-it just felt right." The set also digs deep into the band's catalog and celebrates Soul Asylum's electric and enduring live show, featuring two songs, "Farmer John" and "What Will Become of Me, " that have been played live over the years but never recorded or officially released. When Pulp made their return last year promising "more", they really weren't kidding. "More" was the title of the Sheffield band's first album in 24 years, and with songs that swooned, swaggered, sashayed and strutted, it quickly became a fan favorite amongst the group's starred catalog, topping charts at home and abroad. In the summer of 2021, Geese emerged from out of nowhere, sparking a hype cycle unlike anything that had been seen for a young American rock band in recent memory. Suddenly a band that had previously planned to release some music, break up, and go away to college was touring the world. And during this entire process, that very same band everyone was getting to know ceased to exist. On a practical level, Geese are still the group we were introduced to in 2021. But spiritually, Geese have returned as an entirely different prospect. Their new album 3D Country is the sound of a restless, adventurous band redefining themselves. Anyone who has seen Geese live recently might've noticed the band adopted a different vibe onstage - more of a volcanic, unpredictable aesthetic. It turns out that wasn't a flipside to the recordings of Projector, but foreshadowing that there was more to the story. Knowing they were now beyond teenage basement experiments and were instead making something for an audience who would hear it, Geese felt emboldened. "When we were writing Projector it was about narrowing the scope, trying to do more with less," Gus Green says. "When we started writing for 3D Country we were trying to do a lot more and seeing what worked and what didn't." At the same time, they're well aware of how significant a departure they've made. "As music listeners, we all appreciate bands who change over time, and are comfortable with risk," Cameron Winter adds. It wasn't necessarily a given that Geese would overhaul their sound, but with age came new adventures and interests. "Maybe the last record was our teenage angst and 3D Country is our newfound twenty-something arrogance," he quips.

Feeble Little Horse is naturally delighted to present their third full-length LP, bitknot. The album was written, arranged, produced, and recorded by Sebastian Kinsler, Lydia Slocum, and Jake Kelley across their respective homes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A spirited investigation into the unnatural space created between human nature and a culture of convenience, a synthesis of dirt and digital, bitknot by Feeble Little Horse creates a language wherein one can re-imbue a sanctity of interdependence away from consumptive "self-sufficiency" and materialism. Slocum's meandering introspection playfully harmonizes against Kinsler's hooks, walls of noise, a supercharged car battery's worth of synths and samples dropped in the ocean of their guitar-driven songwriting framework. Meanwhile, some of Kelley's most laser-focused drums to date create a sonic chimera that is as likely to be found nascently developing in the early aughts as some unknown, chromatic future.
