Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like 'Missed the Boat,' 'Education' and 'Little Motel.' It's hard to tell if there's another 'Float On' in the bunch. In fact, the first single, 'Dashboard,' is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to 'Florida,' however, it hardly matters.

Short Bus is the 1995 platinum-selling debut album by Filter, the alternative/industrial band formed by original Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Richard Patrick and guitarist/programmer Brian Liesegang. Short Bus ended up going platinum, selling over one million copies, largely due to the success of the band's single "Hey Man Nice Shot." Richard Patrick has gone on to name bands such as Pantera, Skinny Puppy, Helmet and Big Black as influences for the album's sound, which is guitar-heavy and features the use of a drum machine for percussion. FONTAINES D.C. / ROMANCE / Irish indie rock sensation Fontaines D.C. return with new album ROMANCE, their debut on XL Recordings, out on August 23rd. Although it's more song-driven and acoustic than Kid A (2000), Radiohead'sfollow-up 2001 effort Amnesiac was hulled from the same sessions and it served as the first time in the band's career that a new record didn't bring about a complete shift in artistic priorities. It's nevertheless another brilliant offering from the most musically innovative band in modern music and another fine example of the fact that they're comfortably in a league all their own.

The legendary debut studio album from Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham Nicks is the only studio album by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as a duo, prior to them joining Fleetwood Mac. Released on September 5, 1973, Buckingham Nicks quickly faded from commercial view but never disappeared from the cultural conversation. Limited 180gm audiophile vinyl LP pressing including insert. Shangri-La Dee Da was the fifth studio album by American Hard Rock band Stone Temple Pilots. It was produced by Brendan O'Brien and released in 2001. The album was certified Gold. While recording the album, the band also worked on a documentary and coffee table book. Neither was released, however, and limited footage was made available through the band's official website in the form of live performance-based music videos. The album's most successful song 'Days of the Week' was only being performed at a handful of dates on the supporting tour for the album. However, the album's second single 'Hollywood Bitch' has become a staple of the band's live set ever since their 2008 reunion.

Arriving mere months after their initial assault, The Runaways crank up the intensity on their dominant second album, painting stark pictures of teenage rebellion across a stunning set of originals. This final album featuring original vocalist Cherie Currie, Queens Of Noise displays advances in The Runaways' songwriting and playing while keeping their take-no-prisoners attitude totally intact. Released in January 1977, Queens Of Noise finds The Runaways out to prove they were not some novelty act, but a genuine rock and roll animal. The album kicks off with the title track, written by Billy Bizeau (keyboardist for the Quick, another band associated with Kim Fowley, the man "behind" The Runaways), and it blasts out like a declaration of rock and roll as sung by Joan Jett. "Take It Or Leave It," written by Jett, follows and shows the ladies were more than able to hold their own against other hard rockers of the era.

Reinventing the wheel of alternative pop, Icelandic group Sugarcubes (that boasted the mighty Björk within its ranks) burst onto the international music scene with their debut, featuring the unforgettable track ‘Birthday’.

It’s sometimes hard to recall now just how much of an impact The Sugarcubes debut single ‘Birthday’ made when it’s magical off-kilter melody first hit the airwaves via John Peel’s show in the latter part of 1987 (it took the number one spot in his ‘Festive 50’ that Christmas).

In particular, the song’s extraordinary singer/ narrator, Björk Guðmundsdóttir was the subject of much wild speculation in the UK music press. “Can she possibly be human?” wondered Melody Maker’s foaming Single of the Week review (mirrored in NME). “A record of debilitating beauty,” it continued. “Nothing this year has had us more thoroughly vanquished.”

And when the singles ‘Coldsweat’ and later, ‘Deus’ followed it, the somewhat more visceral tones of one Einar Örn Benediktsson introduced an electric counterpoint to Björk’s lustrously divine howl.

Over 1988, The Sugarcubes – courted by a UK press hungry for the scoop on Iceland’s first bona-fide indie rock sensations – thrilled, confounded, irritated and intrigued in equal measure, the band regularly pushed to explode the patronizing attitudes and expectations they encountered from the get-go.

Whatever, the band were undisputedly, breathtakingly different and when Life’s Too Good dropped in April ’88, its wild jumble of raucous pop, skewed jazz, punk, absurdist rock’n’roll, menace, sarcasm and sublimity lived up to expectations. By the end of the year it had clocked up nearly half a million sales and The Sugarcubes had almost singlehandedly established Icelandic music in the popular consciousness. It still sounds fantastic today.

By the end of ‘88 all three singles had charted in the year’s Independent Top 40 best-sellers, the album going into the national Top 40 and the band making appearances in the top five of most categories in the ‘indies’ end of year polls.
