Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus formed Boygenius after booking a tour together, but the trio had subconsciously been in the works for longer than that. Very much a 20th century band, The Killers have turned their initial obsession with British alternative pop, indie rock and lo-fi into a huge, stadium-filling sound that manages to retain integrity while appealing to the mainstream. Brendan O'Brien Produced/Mixed Posthumous Covers Collection Personally Selected and Sequenced by Chris Cornell!

No One Sings Like You Anymore is a posthumous collection of ten cover songs which Chris Cornell personally selected and sequenced to celebrate artists and songs that inspired him. Recorded by Cornell in 2016, the album, which is his last fully completed studio album, features his renditions of John Lennon's "Watching The Wheels," Ghostland Observatory's "Sad Sad City," Harry Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire," Carl Hall's "You Don't Know Nothing About Love," Electric Light Orchestra's "Showdown," Terry Reid's "To Be Treated Rite," Lorraine Ellison's "Stay With Me Baby" (originally released for HBO's show Vinyl), "Get It While You Can," popularized by Janis Joplin, and a new studio recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U," written by Prince.

Cornell's cover of Gun's & Roses "Patience," which earned him his first solo Billboard No.1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, is also included here. All of the instruments on No One Sings Like You Anymore were played by Chris Cornell and Brendan O'Brien, who also produced and mixed the album.

Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on 'Sober' and 'Crawl Away'. Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy ('Intolerance,' 'Sober'; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and its consequences ('Prison Sex'), and deliberate ignorance ('Swamp Song'). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on 'Bottom,' which, along with '4 Degrees,' deals with questions of identity. Undertow is also Tool's most musically adventurous album, with considerably more sophistication than their previous work. Very highly recommended.

Kids See Ghosts is the eponymous debut from the hip hop duo of the same name featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi and the third of five 7-track 2018 albums produced by West succeeding Pusha T's Daytona and his own ye and preceding Nas' Nasir and Teyana Taylor's K.T.S.E. Fans have been anticipating an album length project from the longtime collaborators for a decade now and the intriguing Kids See Ghosts is a cathartic and confessional affair with both artists documenting bouts of depression and struggles with drug abuse throughout. "We just have this chemistry that's undeniable, especially when we have to fight for it with each other," Cudi said. It includes contributions from Pusha T, Yasiin Bey, Ty Dolla Sign and a posthumous vocal sample of Louis Prima.

Hot Buttered Soul sounds exactly as Isaac Hayes named it. The lush arrangements featuring strings and horns were recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit, home of Motown Records, and had been arranged by Johnny Allen, who had arranged music for The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes, and who would later do the arrangements on the soundtrack to Shaft, for which he won a Grammy. The album's opening track, a cover of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic "Walk on By," was like nothing that had ever been heard before in popular music. Hayes' vocals take more than two minutes to appear. Craft Recordings’ 180g vinyl LP makes the wait even more worthwhile and sounds and looks incredible. Remastered from the original analog tapes by engineer Dave Cooley, it also features a replica old-school style tip-on jacket for exquisite packaging. 

Hayes, along with keyboardist Marvell Thomas and The Bar-Keys (Willie Hall, drums; James Alexander, bass; Michael Toles, guitar), recorded the basic tracks for the 1969 set at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Together, they produced the ultimate funk and soul stew to mix with the Detroit strings and horns. "Walk On By" alone runs for 12-minutes, and when it's over there's a sense of having been overwhelmed, but in the nicest way possible. It is so different from Dionne Warwick's original that it stands alone as a definitive reading of this classic number. 

The chart-topping album's other standout track is the 18-minute, LP-side-filling "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," a song that had originally been a hit for Glen Campbell. Hayes speaks the intro, which runs for nearly nine minutes, and when he starts to sing, the song develops into an amazing musical experience. He at once strips it bare and rebuilds it into something that defies definition. The coda on "Phoenix" is just awesome as its intro and the album is worth the price of admission for this track alone. The other two numbers on the record are slightly more traditional, with "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" being a funkyfied track that owes something to the kind of step-change music that was beginning to come from Blue Note Records while "One Woman" is the kind of Southern soul ballad that could only have come from Memphis.

There is no overstating Judas Priest's position at the very top of heavy metal's Mount Olympus. The long-term association (eight consecutive live and studio albums) between the band and producer Tom Allom includes the cornerstone 1980 classic British Steel, their second LP together. It was recorded in four weeks at Tittenhurst Park, previously owned by John Lennon, and the home of Ringo Starr at the time. It was British Steel that took Priest to the masses at the onset of the '80s with huge anthems like "Breaking The Law" and "Living After Midnight," earning the band their first RIAA platinum Top 40 album in the U.S. and their first Top 10 in the U.K. in the process. Deeper album cuts like "Metal Gods" and "The Rage" would also prove to become beloved concert staples. Universally hailed as one of the most influential albums in heavy metal history, fellow musicians and disciples credit British Steel for unleashing metal from its blues origins.

Distinguished by dual magnesium-burn guitars, leather-tough percussion, molten-hot melodies, and the unmistakable piercing falsetto of operatic vocalist, Screaming for Vengeance found Judas Priest laying waste to its contemporaries' softer, cheesier hard-rock styles. An effort on which precision-based speed, mainstream accessibility, and resilient attitude meet in equilibrium, the 1982 set remains the British metal legends' top-selling record. Staked by the breakout "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," which burns white-hot with foot-pounding riffs, prize-fighting percussion, and singer Rob Halford's gun-for-hire blare, Screaming for Vengeance clutches hold of the jugular and doesn't let go. A return to the band's gritty, purist roots, the record revisits the themes of darkness, menace, and the unknown firmly established on the pioneering Stained Class and Killing Machine. 

With the one-two opening tandem of the instrumental "The Hellion" and stomping "Electric Eye," Priest sounds utterly futuristic and terrifying, the instruments seemingly on a swivel and the sawed-off tones flooding the guitar solos with intimidation. A classic head-out-to-the highway anthem ("Riding on the Wind"), a racing proto-thrash banger ("Screaming for Vengeance"), and a scorching exorcism ("Devil's Child") function as the metal-hued bolts that hold the foundations of this Top 20-charting benchmark in place. Perhaps more so here than on any other record, Priest spit-shines hooks and collusive six-string harmonic leads to perfection, giving listeners yin-yang doses of pain and pleasure, sweet and bitter. Songs at once invite sing-a-longs and fist-pumping responses. Screaming for Vengeance marked the last time Priest would sound this heavy in the '80s.

In theory, epic gothic rockers Evanescence have done everything but live up to their name, which is defined as a "disappearance" or something that merely "dissipates like vapor." GZA Liquid Swords on 2LP

According to legend, when the Wu-Tang Clan formed like Voltron on their debut album in 1993, GZA happened to be the head, an appropriate place for a man also called 'The Genius.' Yet at the time few could have predicted that his 1995 masterpiece Liquid Swords would be considered "one of the most substantial lyrical journeys in hip-hop history" (Chicago Tribune).

At the peak of his powers as a producer, Wu-Tang mastermind RZA crafted the album's distinctive soundtrack at his basement studio in Staten Island; a haunting landscape of dusty samples, sharp snares and menacing urban gloom, with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic Samurai flick Shogun Assassin.

Cerebral, strategic and precise with his words, GZA crystallizes a range of influences, from chess to kung-fu films to mob flicks and Eastern philosophy, into sharply delivered rhymes. 1990's Shake Your Money Maker is the triple platinum debut album from The Black Crowes and the brothers Robinson named after Elmore James' classic blues number of the same name. Issued on Rick Rubin's Def American Recordings and produced by George Drakoulias, the blistering 10-song throwback is awash in vocal swagger and guitar hooks. One doesn't have to listen hard to pick up the breadcrumb trail of influences ranging from 60s and 70s groups like Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers, to Faces and the Doobie Brothers. Picking up where their predecessors left off, the Crowes were equally adept at blending rock, soul, country and gospel into something that felt new and electric.

With swagger to spare, the very first track opens the album as a declaration and a promise to rock "Twice As Hard." From the screeching sounds of a car crash on "Thick N' Thin" to Rich Robinson's wondrous dexterity on "Struttin Blues," the whole album has that lighting in a bottle feeling and the raw energy of a live band who can't be contained. But the real success of the album relied upon a pair of No.1 mainstream rock singles, "She Talks to Angels" and "Hard To Handle," which reached the top spot on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart and No.26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Shake Your Money Maker was evidence of a band that was mature beyond their years and primed to take their place in rock history rather than just study it. Original album remastered in 2020.
