The album's lead single, "From the Floor" shows off Vonne and Dre's talents to organically connect disparate influences, fusing icy UK drum & bass breaks with Miami bass bounce, layering on Dirty-South-mixtape-style raps, and dousing the whole thing in spacy psychedelia worthy of Can. "Blatant Localism" spotlights the pair's verbal teamwork, as they trade lines taking aim at style-deficient hypebeast rappers over a pixelated beat, landing on something like turn-of-the-millennium IDM, but with a lot more shit talk. The coolly frenetic "X-Ray Spex" infuses jungle with propulsive synthesizer ambience. And they're as daring with their lyrics as they are with their beats: on "Little Brother," Dre draws an emotionally complex portrait of the hood economics other rappers shallowly glamorize, while "Some Days I Hate My Voice" is Vonne's speaker-knocking ode to androgynous gender euphoria, complete with shout-outs to 100 gecs and 60's trans soul star Jackie Shane.

Ty Segall meets a new non-rock challenge head-on; soundtrack music for the documentary film Whirlybird. A variety of synth sounds, electric keyboards, drums, percussion and saxophone (and yeah, a few guitars) form a shifting impressionist counterpart, instrumental music that dialogues with and serves to frame the film’s compulsive themes and images.

THE MISFITS/COLLECTION 2 (LP)

Along with Legacy of Brutality and The Misfits, here's another pretty damn indispensable non-LP collection of these late-'70s/early-'80s punk legends from New Jersey, America's answer to the early Damned with a better singer and more consistent songwriting. As much as the belated Walk Among Us was a great album, it was always their string of earlier stunning 7' singles that everyone wanted to hear. Here are those red-hot tracks from those singles, with the exception of what already appeared on the two earlier collections. Finally, here's the other half of the classic four-song Bullet EP, of which the opening 'We Are 138' still sounds as fundamentally whacked and nasty as ever. Best of all is the British Beware mini-LP rarity 'Last Caress' (yeah, the one that Metallica covered, only with Glenn Danzig singing it 75 times better and 75 times as evil, and the Misfits are much more scratchy and raunchy), plus the band's finest (guitarist) Bobby Steele-era B-side, 'Children in Heat,' from the Night of the Living Dead 7'. Plus, from the later Doyle era, a flip from 'London Dungeon,' both sides of the 'Halloween' single (of which the demonic B-side 'Halloween II' still sends horror movie chills up the spine), more vastly superior original recordings of Walk Among Us material, a few more unreleased cuts (here, the guitar update on the first single 'Cough/Cool' is a massive vault find, more truly frightening moments, and 'Return of the Fly' is bad-tempered cool), a couple of passable tracks from their final thrash days (not great but better than remembered from their disappointing Earth A.D. swan song), and it's over.

For Mike Campbell, External Combustion – the second album by his first band as a leader, The Dirty Knobs – is proof that lightning can strike twice. The follow-up to their 2020 debut Wreckless Abandon beats a new set of odds and jumps ahead in vision and drive, proving the first record was no one-shot deal. Campbell experienced all of the above and more with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – riding shotgun with his friend and captain as lead guitarist, co-producer, and, at times, co-writer – when he met guitarist Jason Sinay at a session in Los Angeles in 2000. Once Lance Morrison joined in on bass and Matt Laug on drums, that turned into The Dirty Knobs, named after a faulty amp dial.

In 1990, Bikini Kill formed in Olympia, WA to challenge the male-dominated indie rock world with their confrontational declaration of girls up front while guys can go do their thing in the corner. First as a zine, second as a band, third as a legacy, it wasnʼt long before Bikini Kill earned their place as one of the most controversial bands of all time. From its humble beginnings, 2001's Brushfire Fairytales launched the meteoric career of the modern master of soft acoustic folk and surf rock, Jack Johnson. Cut to nearly 20 years later and the singer/songwriter's auspicious debut has stood the test of time selling over 2.5 million copies to date and continues to be one of the best sellers in his catalog. An ear for the irresistible – whether in the vocal delivery or the construction of a pop hook – certainly accounts for its success.

It starts with "Inaudible Melodies," a reference to the singer's laid-back, not to say reticent persona in the early days, and includes some lovely gems like "Flake," with Ben Harper on pedal steel. Only a minor hit, as a single, "Flake" still became a signature tune and live staple. The equally impressive "Drink the Water" is a face up to your fears type song.
