In 1994, hip-hop was going through an at-times painful growth spurt. Since N.W.A.'s and Ice-T's ascent in the late '80s, the rap game was no longer owned by the East Coast. After the worldwide popularity of Dr. Dre's The Chronic in 1992, things were looking even worse for hip-hop's hometown. The East Coast / West Coast feud that would later indirectly claim the lives of Biggie and 2Pac was still in its infancy, but New York needed a shot in the arm. The hype behind young Queensbridge native Nasir "Nas" Jones had been in full swing months before his smash debut album Illmatic, thanks to Columbia Records' promo machine. From his earliest appearance on Main Source's "Live at the BBQ," to his own accomplished debut "Half Time" (as Nasty Nas, on the Zebrahead soundtrack in late 1992), it was clear that this kid was something special.

In fact, the pressure on him must have been overwhelming at times. April 19, 1994 couldn't have come soon enough. And as soon as the first lines of "N.Y. State of Mind" kick in, bolstered by perhaps DJ Premier's darkest beat of all time, the entire East Coast breathed a collective sigh of relief. God's Son had arrived. Backed by an absolute all-star cast of New York's top-shelf producers – Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and a youngster named L.E.S. – the album never lets up. Serious to a fault, and lyrically dense to an extent that has possibly never been matched, the 20-year old Nas stood on the shoulders of his predecessors and proudly proclaimed, "Don't fuck with the East...we are back."

Illmatic was actually a slow-burn, which might surprise fans that have come to its genius more recently. Despite an unheard-of "5 Mics" in The Source – despite an unwritten rule of never awarding classic status to debuts – it didn't go gold until early 1996, and didn't hit platinum status until late 2001. But when you dive deeper that shouldn't be a shock: like Black Moon and Wu-Tang's debuts, it was a dark, hard record, tailor-made for heads in New York. There were no dance beats, no crossover love songs. Just boom-bap and rhymes, skills and heart.

Accessible and ambitious, Tears for Fears' phenomenal 10-million-selling second album, Songs From The Big Chair, marked a transition in the band's sound and catapulted them into international prominence. As a group, Tears for Fears led the "Second British Invasion" of pop music in the mid-'80s in both the U.S. and Europe with songs from the album dominating the radio airwaves. In the U.S., "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" led the Songs from the Big Chair single releases, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985. "Shout" was the band's second single and stayed at No. 1 for three weeks. The album inevitably went straight to No. 1, selling 5-million copies in the U.S. alone. Songs from the Big Chair peaked at No. 2 on the U.K. album charts and remained in the Top 10 for over six months. The album went on to yield the hit singles "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (which spent 14 weeks in the U.K. Top 5 and peaked at No. 2) and "Shout," which reached No. 4 and remained on the chart for 16 weeks. Both became global smash hits.

Some albums define an era, a place, a certain time in one's life. The Beastie Boys Check Your Head practically defined the summer of 1992 for those who were wary of the mainstreaming of rap and the insurgency of grunge. It was here that MCA, Adrock and Mike D. created a musical montage that defied genre, one with the swagger of punk and the rootsy earthiness of early-'70s soul-jazz, all layered with a hip-hop consciousness. Lo-fi, garagy, guitar-riff-loaded tracks like "Pass Da Mic" and "Gratitude" made it clear that the Beasties could be taken as serious musical forces, even innovators. Yet they still brilliantly tempered the proceedings with romps like "Professor Booty" and "Funky Boss." One of the best albums of the '90's, Check Your Head was a turning point for the band and the genesis of a new musical hybrid.

New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Lorde scored her first US No. 1 album when her long-awaited second LP Melodrama topped the Billboard 200 in the summer of 2017. All Nine Songs on New Vance Powell Co-Produced Studio Collection Previously Performed Live by the Band Dating Back to 2011!

"Sigma Oasis came to be during the first week of November 2019, but it wasn't planned that way at all. We were headed up to The Barn to rehearse for our fall tour and ended up discussing this batch of relatively recent songs that we were particularly proud of and always wished we had recorded, but hadn't had a chance to yet. Trey suggested calling up Vance Powell as he mixed and engineered Ghosts Of The Forest. Vance was very familiar with the space and the console so we set up the gear with no room dividers, no click tracks. Nothing. Just like a Phish show. Open space. We played for a couple days. We just played a bunch of songs - very quickly, a few takes, very organic, natural, live, honest. We had the best time. When we were done, our photographer Rene came up and asked us to come out on the porch and snap a photo. It took about two minutes. And that's the album cover - a snapshot of our band at that point in time.

"Vance had some stuff on his schedule so he asked as a favor if we would mind if he didn't mix until early March. Now four months might sound like a long time, but it gave all of us time to work on the tracks - Page overdubbed a lot of keyboards at home. Trey went to a studio in New York and did vocals and percussion. We had time to pick which songs we wanted to work on. We let a few of them go, which was difficult, but that's ok. When we recorded the album, we didn't plan to release it this way. But today, because of the environment we're all in, it just feels right. We don't know the next time that we're all going to be able to be together. This is an opportunity to have a moment where the Phish community can share something despite being physically separated.

Sublime 40oz. To Freedom on 2LP

Iconic Long Beach, CA reggae-punk/alternative-rock band Sublime was founded in 1988 by Bradley Nowell (vocals/guitar), Eric Wilson (bass/vocals) and Bud Gaugh (drums). Their self-produced debut 40 oz. to Freedom was released in 1992 via the band's label Skunk Records and has subsequently been certified double platinum. The classic double album is home to such radio hits as "Date Rape" and "Badfish," plus the band's stylized covers of the Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias," The Toyes' "Smoke Two Joints," Bad Religion's "We're Only Gonna Die for Our Arrogance" and The Descendents "Hope."

Double vinyl LP pressing of this newly-remastered 1996 album. Sublime is the eponymous third and final studio album by the ska punk band. The album was produced by Paul Leary and David Kahne. Sublime formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California by vocalist/guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh. By the time it came to record this major label debut, Nowell had been struggling with a heroin addiction. Sublime was recorded over a period of three months in Austin, Texas. The album's musical style contains elements of punk rock, reggae, and ska, as well as dancehall, hip hop, and dub music, with tempos ranging wildly. Nowell's lyrical subject matter relates to relationships, prostitution, riots, and addiction.

Cyberpunk. Karen Carpenter. A date with Mary Christ. The hypnogogic state. Go-carts. Deconstruction. UFO's. Rap misogyny. Joan Crawford. Marriage. A teenage girl named Goo. In the primordial soup that is Sonic Youth, one of the most critically-acclaimed underground bands of all-time, the above is just some of the musical fodder for 1990's Goo, the band's seventh album and first on a major label (DGC Records).

Mixing American myth and pop images with alternative ideas about music in a great cosmic blender, Sonic Youth is truly, ultimately, progressive rock - bold and daring, stretching pop to it's limits, unique and transcendent. Sonic Youth doesn't throw away the rock cliches here, they reshape them. Double vinyl LP pressing. Known for their explorative and restless sound, taking influence from old style rock like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Pink Floyd as well as from electronica and hip hop, each of Radiohead's albums marks a cornerstone in their musical evolution. Although it's more song-driven and acoustic than Kid A (2000), Radiohead'sfollow-up 2001 effort Amnesiac was hulled from the same sessions and it served as the first time in the band's career that a new record didn't bring about a complete shift in artistic priorities. It's nevertheless another brilliant offering from the most musically innovative band in modern music and another fine example of the fact that they're comfortably in a league all their own.
