True Genius
Regular price $36.00 Save $-36.00Double vinyl LP pressing. Ray Charles is both one of the most iconic artists of all time as well as one of the hardest to define by genre. At the beginning of his career, he was dubbed the Genius of Soul for boldly combining traditional R&B with Gospel music and giving birth to Soul music. Yet this momentous musical accomplishment was just the beginning of a five-decade career in which he uniquely succeeded in virtually every genre. Ray's unique mastery of music allowed him to continue to explore all forms of music, freely floating between jazz, blues, pop, rock, soul and country while continuing to combine them in new, unprecedented ways. This two (2) disc vinyl collection illustrates the many musical "sides" of Ray by focusing each album side on some of the broader genre categories he visited most.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (Verve Acoustic Series)
Regular price $42.00 Save $-42.00Described by Mingus himself as “ethnic folk-dance music,” The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady is a single song cycle rather than a traditional jazz album of separate tracks. The intricate arrangements and raw emotional swings of the piece make it a highlight of Mingus’ career, and one of the most compelling listens in jazz.

Joanne
Regular price $44.00 Save $-44.00Musical chameleon Lady Gaga secures the pop thrown once again with the new rock-pop-country adventure Joanne – her highly anticipated fifth studio album. It's a wonderful collection of tracks that showcase Gaga's vocal abilities, songwriting talent and wide-ranging tastes.
While many artists have chosen to adopt new personalities in the past (ie. Ziggy Stardust or Sasha Fierce), Joanne is in fact not a new Gaga persona. The album is named after her late aunt, who died at a young age. Between 2014 – 2016, Gaga left the spotlight and spent time reconnecting with family and friends. It was during this time that she discovered the challenges that her late aunt faced, and in turn inspired her to become who she is today.
Featuring the well received singles "Perfect Illusion" and "Million Reasons," contributions on the album come from such diverse sources as Beck, Florence Welch, Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, Father John Misty, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Hillary Lindsey, Mark Ronson, RedOne and Jeff Bhasker. Package is a double gatefold with 2 standard weight black discs.
Voyager (Opaque Purple)
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00Voyager, the seventh LP from Current Joys, rattles with the live-wire feeling that's thrummed through all of Nick Rattigan's previous releases: quavering, scream-itself-hoarse vocals and self-interrogation via song. But here, that bristling, sentimental rock ‘n' roll cacophony is overlaid with a soundtrack orchestra guiding it along. It's an odyssey, a grand-sounding journey of self-discovery spread across sixteen tracks. Part ekphrasis, part personal, it's Rattigan learning new ways to understand his own feelings and identity while inspired by the highly-stylized, striking storytelling of filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, Lars Von Trier, Terrence Malick, Agnès Varda, and Andrei Tarkovsky. Voyager is unlike anything Current Joys has released before.
On his new LP, Rattigan eschews lo-fi home recordings for a full band and recording sessions at Stinson Beach Studios. As a vocalist/drummer in his other band Surf Curse, Rattigan had finally opened up to the possibility of working in a professional studio: "I'd just been very stubborn in wanting to do it all my own way, but I guess I've kind of opened up the creative process to more people at this point," Rattigan explains. " And I think it yields better results."
Frequently Rattigan uses film as a jumping off point for songwriting. "Big Star" was written on tour after watching Adventureland, hoping to capture that specific endless youth energy of the soundtrack's Replacements and Big Star songs. "Amateur" is piano-heavy, a slow-build of tension, flitting with prettiness, while the creeping "Rebecca," named after the Hitchcock film before Rattigan had actually seen it, radiates a haunted, sinister presence; "Naked" feels almost unhinged, while "American Honey" is a longing, mellowed lament. The title track, "Voyager pt. 2," holds a sparse, near-funereal starkness, as well as the album's thesis: I'm a voyager in my mind, before the Spielberg-esque strings swell.

Regular price $44.00 Save $-44.00Damn the Torpedoes
Regular price $33.00 Save $-33.00Damn The Torpedoes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' third album (and first on Backstreet/MCA,) proved to be the breakthrough for the singer-songwriter-guitarist and his band (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch). The album was released in October 1979, after a highly publicized lawsuit in which Petty made a groundbreaking stand for artist rights, refusing to be sold by one record company to another without his consent.
Damn The Torpedoes became the group's first Top 10, remaining at No. 2 for seven weeks (only Pink Floyd's The Wall kept it from the top). It sold over 5-million copies, and had 3 top 40 hits and 4 top 5 rock-radio hits. The album was an immediate critical success, with Rolling Stone declaring Damn The Torpedoes "the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album we have all been waiting for."
Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the album reached double platinum quickly and catapulted the band to arena performances where they played such classic cuts as the infectious Top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That," blistering rockers "Refugee" and "Here Comes My Girl," and the exhilarating "Even The Losers." Bursting with full speed ahead American rock ‘n' roll, the album brought together rock, folk, country and blues in what has become Petty and the Heartbreakers' signature style.
The release garnered Petty his first Rolling Stone Magazine cover in February 1980. In 2003, nearly 25 years after its release, Rolling Stone honored Damn The Torpedoes on its list of "the greatest albums ever made," and in 2002 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, during their first year of eligibility. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of the very few artists to score a top five record on the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades.

Home Cookin' (Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series)
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00JIMMY SMITH / HOME COOKIN - Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. The Incredible Jimmy Smith was a self-taught keyboard virtuoso who gave up the piano in 1954 in favor of the Hammond B3 organ, setting up shop in a warehouse in Philadelphia and woodshedding for a year before emerging with a revolutionary approach to the instrument that immediately caught the ear Alfred Lion. The Blue Note founder recorded the B3 innovator as often as he could between 1956-1963 in a range of different settings and released a tremendous run of albums that laid the foundation for the Soul Jazz movement. Drawn from three different sessions recorded in 1958-1959, Home Cookin' featured Smith in a quartet with tenor saxophonist Percy France, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and drummer Donald Bailey, and it stands as one of the most deeply soulful albums Smith ever made. The band gives a soul jazz symposium on this seven-song set that includes covers of tunes by Ma Rainey, Ray Charles, and Jimmy McGriff along with originals by Smith and Burrell. - This Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optima
