Double vinyl LP pressing. Bitches Brew is a studio album by jazz musician, composer, and bandleader Miles Davis, originally released on March 30, 1970. It marked his continuing experimentation with electric instruments that he had previously featured on the critically acclaimed In a Silent Way (1969). With these instruments, such as the electric piano and guitar, Davis rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of loose, rock-influenced arrangements based on improvisation. In subsequent years, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz's greatest albums and a progenitor of the jazz rock genre, as well as a major influence on rock and funk musicians.

The Cult Pure Cult The Singles Compilation on LP

Released domestically for the first time, remastered and with reworked art. Pure Cult is a definitive compilation, bringing together all of The Cult's singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary," "Fire Woman" and more.

The Cult, unlike its predecessor bands the Southern Death Cult and the Death Cult, was unapologetic about its mainstream rock & roll aspirations, which makes Pure Cult the best possible starting place for the group. The Cult was a singles band, and a pretty great one, too, as evidenced by the Stones-like "Love Removal Machine" and the blazing "Fire Woman."

The ensemble's mixture of '60s influences and hard-rock power helped define a whole subset of the late-'80s alternative-rock scene, and it's fair to say that groups like Stone Temple Pilots owed at least some of their success to the Cult's early flirtations with the rock mainstream. Pure Cult gives a good sense of the band's surprisingly organic shift in sound, ranging from the gothy neo-psychedelia of "She Sells Sanctuary" to the sneering rock of "Star."

The band that helped sonically define alternative rock, Collective Soul combined grunge, soul, and Southern-style hard rock on their breakout 1993 debut full-length, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, which spawned the indelible No. 1 rock radio smash "Shine" and the follow-up hit "Breathe." Collective Soul burst into the mainstream in 1994 with the album Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, which went double platinum and included the gold-selling single "Shine," among other hits. In one fell swoop, the band was cemented as the jukebox heroes of a new generation. Their self-titled follow-up album of 1995 was even more successful, going triple platinum with "December," "The World I Know" and "Where the River Flows" all reaching No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Frontman Ed Roland considers Collective Soul the band's true debut album and Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid as more of a promotional demo, "It's so funny for people to compare the two. J. Cole's fifth full-length effort, KOD debuted atop the Billboard 200 in April 2018, marking the North Carolina rapper's fifth consecutive No. 1 album. KOD - which stands for Kids On Drugs, King Overdosed and Kill Our Demons - takes us into a new world highlighting addictions of all sorts. The gold certified record is home to the two Top 10 singles "KOD" and "ATM." Cole explains the three acronyms starting with Kids On Drugs, "If I turn on the TV right now, it's not gonna take long for there to be an advertisement that pops up that says 'Are you feeling down? Have you been having lonely thoughts?' And then they shove a pill in your face. The first response of any problem is Medicate." As for King Overdosed he adds, "That's representing me, the times that I was, and am, afflicted by the same methods of escape." And Kill Our Demons, he explains, "That's the end goal: To face our shit, realize that we have some shit going on inside, everybody...whether it be from traumatic childhood experiences, whether it be from a lack of attention, confidence issues, insecurities. Whatever it is, we gotta be honest with ourselves."

Cole with guest producers Elite, Ron Gilmore, Tray Samuels, DJ Dahl, Illmind, Cardiak, CritCal, Vinylz, Organized Noize and Jproof. Cole calls out white rappers Justin Timberlake, Eminem and Macklemore on the track "Fire Squad" hinting "history repeats itself" ala the Elvis rip-off controversy in the '50s.

1981's October saw U2 rising not only to the usual challenges of proving that you're more than a one-album wonder, but to the specific pressure of creating new work as the clock ticked ever louder. Where Boy had only brushed against a mainstream audience in the UK, peaking at No. 52, October reached No. 11. "Fire" was the opening shot, and it made some noise. The song was their first hit single at home, reaching the Top 5 in Ireland, and gave U2 their first UK Top 40 entry. Next came "Gloria," the second single and the opening track. The song's Latin chorus foretold an LP with strong religious themes, but also with a developing sense of the band's songwriting maturity and instrumental dexterity. The innate percussive tension of "I Threw A Brick Through A Window" and urgency of "Rejoice" were offset by the measured, near-instrumental "Scarlet" and the affecting piano balladry of "October" itself.

Double 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Achtung Baby is the seventh studio album by Irish rockers U2. It was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and was released on 18 November 1991 on Island Records. U2 shifted their musical direction to incorporate influences from alternative rock, industrial music, and electronic dance music into their sound. Thematically, Achtung Baby is darker, more introspective, and at times more flippant than their previous work. The album and the subsequent multimedia-intensive Zoo TV Tour were central to the group's 1990s reinvention, by which they abandoned their earnest public image for a more lighthearted and self-deprecating one.

In November 1986, the Beastie Boys released their debut album Licensed To Ill on Def Jam/Columbia. It stands as one of Columbia's fastest-selling debuts to date and eventually sold over nine million copies in the U.S. alone. Licensed To Ill is still the only album by a white hip-hop act to receive the coveted 5 mics from the Source who has selected the album as one of the best 100 Best Rap Albums of all-time. Playful music videos were made for the classic cuts "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)," "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," "Girls," "Hold It Now Hit It," "Rhymin' and Stealin'" and "She's Crafty," while further gems like "Brass Monkey," "Paul Revere," and "Time To Get Ill" proved Licensed To Ill to be all killer no filler.

Kerry King of Slayer even made an appearance on the album playing lead guitar on "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," which was named as a spoof on Motorhead's No Sleep 'til Hammersmith album. King's appearance came about because Rick Rubin was producing both bands simultaneously (Slayer's Reign in Blood was also originally released on Dej Jam). The album's iconic cover, front to back, features a Boeing 727 - with Beastie Boys emblazoned on the tail - crashing head-on into the side of a mountain, appearing as an extinguished joint. The tail of the plane has the Def Jam logo and the legend '3MTA3' which spells 'EATME' when viewed in a mirror.

BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "1nce Again" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By a Duo Or Group. A Tribe Called Quest seem to grow, both musically and lyrically, with every LP, constantly setting standards for other rappers to follow. But they rarely stray from their chosen path. Since their 1990 debut, hip-hop has gone through numerous phases (new jack swing, gangster, hardcore), but the Tribe have remained focused on the music's true elements: BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE. Produced by the Ummah, which consists of the Tribe's Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad along with newcomer Jay Dee, BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE sports the usual jazzy beats, and reintroduces Tribe as the all-around hip-hop group. Muhammad's use of funky samples, Phife's self-satisfying attitude, and Q-Tip's abstract poetry are only part of the reason why the trio keeps rap music on lockdown. There are other bands capable of experimenting with new sounds while delivering lyrical positivism, but they often forget how to simply rock the crowd. A Tribe Called Quest does that, too.
