Van Halen set quite a precedent with its self-titled 1978 debut, one of the most landscape-shifting albums ever released. How does a band follow something like that? By making a record that's even better. And hard rock tour de force Van Halen II surely fits the bill. Granted, by the time this sophomore set appeared in late 1979, the world had already been introduced to Eddie Van Halen's pyrotechnic guitar skills and trick bag of jaw-dropping solos. And everyone knew about David Lee Roth's flamboyant singing, oversexed machismo, and vaudeville antics.
But the quartet ups the quotient level throughout the mighty Van Halen II, which swaggers to a flawless batch of songs and phenomenal playing. There's not a weak moment or note here. Moreover, as Eddie consistently delivers searing fills, acrobatic leads, and gravity-defying phrasings, Roth steps it up a notch, inserting himself in the role of the come-hither vocalist whose self-aware humor balances his glammed-up, spandex-clad, riser-leaping persona.
Once again proving themselves deft with their choice of covers (the lead-off "You're No Good"), Van Halen turns up the heat throughout, celebrating cheap and carefree sleaze, booze-soaked good times, and yes, the band's perennial favorite subject, women. Highlights include "Beautiful Girls," "Spanish Fly" and the Top 20 single "Dance the Night Away."

Co-produced and co-written by Kacey Musgraves with Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, the 4x Grammy Award-winning Golden Hour is the country/pop singer-songwriter's most intimate to date, featuring the genre transcendent hit singles "Butterflies," "Space Cowboy" and "High Horse." Recorded at Sheryl Crow's Nashville, TN studio, Musgraves told EW that the critically acclaimed LP has a "trippy twist" and cited "the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young as influences" as well as her recent marriage to fellow musician Ruston Kelly.
"I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us," she says of the album's theme. "None of the masks are solely us, but they're all us. On this record, there's the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that's missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser – they're all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole."
Golden Hour was the big winner at the 2019 Grammy Awards taking home hardware for Album of the Year, Best Country Album, Best County Solo Performance ("Butterflies") and Best Country Song ("Space Cowboy"). The last time a country album won Album Of The Year was Fearless by Taylor Swift ten years prior in 2009.

Graceland-25th Anniversary

Eclectic Multi-Grammy-Winning Effort Remastered on 180g Vinyl and Pressed at RTI for Audiophile Sound: Graceland Forever Changed the Relationship Between Pop and World Music
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavored rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech.
An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subsequent musical experiments by major artists were measured and continues to provide rewards to its listeners and remains a pivotal listening experience for writers, artists and fans.
The universal appeal of the music of Graceland proved more powerful and enduring than the political hotbed attending its creation. In 1986, the album sold 14 million copies worldwide, and received universal praise from critics around the globe. Paul Simon and the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed on Saturday Night Live and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
By January of 1987, "You Can Call Me Al" was everywhere and Graceland won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammy Awards in 1987. Then, in an unprecedented carryover, the album garnered the Grammy for 'Song of the Year' with its title track in 1988. The album generated three hit singles and kept Simon and the Graceland tour on the road for five years.
This audiophile edition of Graceland has been remastered on 180g 12" vinyl and includes an art-quality collectible poster and a download card with the full album plus three bonus tracks.
"In many ways, Graceland was the most extraordinary experience in my entire career," notes Simon. "The insight into rhythm was the great gift that I received from making the trip to South Africa, and collaborating with African musicians."
"This lacquer cut processed and pressed at RTI on 180 gram vinyl sounds dramatically superior to the original in every way. The overall tonal balance is far superior. The low bass is as powerful as on the original but much better controlled. If the opening drum thwacks on 'Boy In the Bubble,' don't sound deep, ultra-tight and tuneful, blame your system, not the record. You are guaranteed to hear heretofore hidden musical details and parts that on the original slipped through the musical cracks. This reissue has an overall tonal richness and clarity as well as dynamic impact only hinted at on the original."

Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
Regular price $31.99 Save $-31.99Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? is the second studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on September 19, 1986. The project was originally handled by Combat Records, resulting in the first mix of the album being co-produced by Randy Burns. Capitol Records then bought the rights to the album and hired another producer, Paul Lani, to mix it himself. The album's front cover, featuring the band's mascot Vic Rattlehead, was created by Ed Repka. The recording of the album was difficult for the band because of the ongoing drug issues the members had at the time. This was the last Megadeth album to feature drummer Gar Samuelson and guitarist Chris Poland, who were fired shortly after the album's promotional tour. The title track, noted for it's politically conscious lyrics, was released as the album's lead single. Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? is regarded as a thrash metal classic and as an album that gave prominence to extreme metal. It has been featured in several publications' best album lists, including Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and Martin Popoff's Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time. The album has been reissued several times over the years. In 2004, the album was remixed and remastered by Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine, with extensive liner notes detailing the album's background. In 2011, the three different versions were reissued as part of the album's 25th anniversary celebration. All of them, with the exception of the 2004 mixes, feature new remastering.

Sonic Temple-30th Anniversary
Regular price $37.98 Save $-37.982019 marks the 30th anniversary of The Cult's seminal album SONIC TEMPLE. On September 13th, Beggars Arkive will reissue the album. Now cut onto two pieces of black vinyl, the audio is improved and contains 16 tracks total, which comprise the original album plus 6 B-sides. In addition to the reissue, a box set and 5-CD set are also being released. Originally released in 1989, Sonic Temple proved to be a pivotal moment for both band and the wider rock scene. Produced by the legendary Bob Rock, Sonic Temple had four chart-topping singles; "Fire Woman", "Edie (Ciao Baby)", "Sun King" and "Sweet Soul Sister". In a recent interview about the album, Ian Astbury explained how the band brought together hard rock and indie rock to create the unique, game-changing sounds on Sonic Temple. "We wanted to retain our core DNA as we went deeper into psych and hard rock influences. It was a complete immersion for me into art, film, music, poetry and literature, weaving those influences into what was to become Sonic Temple. The band was becoming more popular. We were in uncharted waters. Most of the bands we had come up with had split up or fallen off. We were accelerating. There was no real time to breathe. We were forming new allegiances and breaking the glass ceiling of 'the indie outsider.'" The album catapulted The Cult into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the US alone, and was declared platinum in 1990. It made it to #10 on the Billboard charts, and the above mentioned songs are all rock-radio staples to this day. The Cult continues to record and tour and they have released six albums since Sonic Temple, the most recent being Hidden City in 2016. They've been spending 2019 celebrating this album by performing all over the world on a tour they've billed as A Sonic Temple, paying homage to the album.

Dedicated to his mother Verna Prine, the intimate and playful John Prine Live was largely recorded during a three-day stint at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, California and released in 1988 on the singer/songwriter's own label Oh Boy Records. Frank
Regular price $41.99 Save $-41.99Amy Winehouse Frank on 2LP
Much can be said about the late Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K.'s flagship vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and tabloids seemed to focus on her rowdy behavior, afflictions and tragic end, but fans and critics alike embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals.
Her platinum-selling breakthrough album, Frank (2003), elicited comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. Interestingly enough, despite her strong accent and vernacular, one can often hear aspects of each of those singers' vocal repertoire in Winehouse's own voice. Nonetheless, her allure had always been her songwriting - almost always deeply personal but best known for its profanity and brutal candor.
With contributions from hip-hop producer/keyboardist Salaam Remi, Winehouse's amalgam of jazz, pop, soul, and hip-hop received rave reviews. The album was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as two Brit Awards, and its lead single, "Stronger Than Me," won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song. In 2007 Frank re-entered the charts in the wake of the phenomenal success of her sophomore release, the five times Grammy Award winning chart-topper, Back To Black.
