Very much a 20th century band, The Killers have turned their initial obsession with British alternative pop, indie rock and lo-fi into a huge, stadium-filling sound that manages to retain integrity while appealing to the mainstream. In that happy place they've released four studio albums that have sold an estimated 22 million copies worldwide (all four topping the UK charts) and matched the long form discs' Platinum status with massive hit singles.

The band's third studio album Day & Age (2008) is yet another superior modern rock and synthpop fusion overseen by British electronic guru Stuart Price. This collaboration helps make the wondrous "Human" such a special song. Left off the Sawdust compilation, because it was just too good, Flowers sees this as a philosophical meeting between Johnny Cash and the Pet Shop Boys, while others thought it welded New Order to Bruce Springsteen.

The new wave party atmosphere of "Spaceman" and the rootsy "A Dustland Fairytale" are at such a tangent to "Human" that one is struck by Flowers' ability to switch from universal truths to the deeply personal narrative style. That's his skill just as much as the band written "The World We Live In" allows them to inhabit different terrain.

Overseen by Pixies producer Gil Norton and recorded at Pink Floyd's Britannia Row Studios, where band favourites, Joy Division, had made Closer, Chrome marked a huge step forward, honed on the road after the constant touring to support previous album Ferment. With it's sleeve designed by Storm Thorgerson, it's as if the album was a dry run for Muse. There is increasing experimentation – the 7 minutes plus of Fripp are, as writer Ben Cardew noted, "celestial and full of dread." As Pitchfork wrote, "It's as if Chrome were imported from another history of alt-rock, one more textured and romantic, where it sits deservedly atop the pile."

Geese are a quintet of native Brooklyners who formed during their freshman year of high school. They are also one of the most hyped exports to emerge from the borough in years with a complex and energetic sound built from scraps of post-punk, prog, and a deep lineage of New York rock & roll. During the front half of 2020, the band's home-recorded demos suddenly became a target for serious label attention and, having just graduated from high school, Geese found themselves fielding offers from both sides of the Atlantic. New York's Partisan and London's PIAS won out in a joint deal resulting in the release of the band's full-length debut, Projector. Members Cameron Winter (vocals, keyboards), Gus Green (guitar), Foster Hudson (guitar), Dominic DiGesu (bass), and Max Bassin (drums) project a sense of confidence and benefit from the kind of chemistry forged during youth. Over the album's nine tightly arranged cuts, Geese come off far more professional and experienced than they have a right to be. Echoes of Television, the Strokes, and Alt-J, are present in their blend of intricate guitar lines and kinetic rhythms. Opener "Rain Dance" is a captivating and frantic bit of psychedelic post-punk that immediately sets the album's nervy tone. On "Low Era," they mix spidery guitar runs with a moody groove and Winter flexes his range with a rough-hewn falsetto oddly reminiscent of late-'70s John Martyn. Throughout the set, Geese cover a nice range of dynamics, indicating the depth of their influences and tastes. Projector is an impressive debut and all-around solid effort from a band at the start of a promising career. ~ Timothy Monger

Pornography is the fourth studio album by English rock band The Cure, originally released on May 4th, 1982 by the Fiction Records. Preceded by the non-album single "Charlotte Sometimes" late the previous year, Pornography was the band's first album with a new producer, Phil Thornalley, and was recorded at RAK Studios from January to April. The sessions saw the group on the brink of collapse, with heavy drug use, band in-fighting and group leader Robert Smith's depression fueling the album's musical and lyrical content. Pornography represents the conclusion of the group's early dark, gloomy musical phase which began with Seventeen Seconds in 1980. - Following it's release, bass guitarist Simon Gallup left the band and the Cure switched to a much brighter and more radio-friendly new wave sound. While poorly received by critics at the time of release, Pornography was their most popular album to date, reaching number 8 in the UK charts. Pornography has since gone on to gain acclaim from critics, and is now considered an important milestone in the development of the gothic rock genre.

who've rebuilt the stereotypically lightweight genre in their own bloodyknuckled American image. Outlaw poets spilling existential dread on mile-wide canvasses of fuzz and reverb. Beginning as a Philly-born bedroom solo project in 2010, Nothing's music has always captured the full scale of the human condition, both the blaring anger and the whispering sadness. a short history of decay, Nothing's fifth solo album and first for Run For Cover Records, widens that aperture even further, providing the most hi-def rendering of Nothing to date. The band have never sounded this colossal, never felt this intimate, never been this honest. With the strongest arsenal in Nothing's ever-shifting lineup locked in - guitarist Doyle Martin (Cloakroom), bassist Bobb Bruno (Best Coast), drummer Zachary Jones (MSC, Manslaughter 777), and third guitarist Cam Smith (Ladder To God, also of Cloakroom) - singer-songwriter Domenic "Nicky" Palermo knew he had the manpower to make the band's most ambitious record yet. Co-written and produced with Whirr guitarist Nicholas Bassett, and with additional production and mixing work from Sonny Diperri (DIIV, Julie), a short history of decay, is the most evolved musical statement in Nothing's catalog. Songs like "Cannibal World" and "Toothless Coal" are cataclysmic lashings of mechanized industrial-gaze that sound like My Bloody Valentine - except more extreme. On the other end of the spectrum, the ornately morose "Purple Strings" boasts a beautiful string arrangement that includes harpist - and two-time Nothing contributor - Mary Lattimore. That baroque delicacy permeates other a short history of decay, highlights, particularly "The Rain Don't Care," a lilting ballad that channels the worn-down elegance of Mojave 3, and also "Nerve Scales," a pattering bop that resembles Radiohead in it's marriage of otherworldly atmosphere and mortal precision. Palermo calls the new record "a final chapter." Not the end of Nothing, but the conclusion of a story that began with Nothing's 2014 debut, Guilty of Everything - another album about time, regret, and confronting uncomfortable truths - and now resolves with a short history of decay,. As much a snapshot of Palermo's past as it is a leap into Nothing's future.
