In the late 80's the Gin Blossoms indelible jangle-pop sound was evolving during radio's diverse mix of hair bands and grunge music. Taking their name from a caption on a W.C. Fields photo, Gin Blossoms hit the big time with their 1992 album New Miserable Experience. It kept the band on the charts for almost three years with singles "Hey Jealousy," "Allison Road," "Until I Fall Away," "Mrs Rita," and "Found Out About You." New Miserable Experience took the airwaves by siege and held MTV hostage in the process, rocketing the band into the mainstream and going on to sell over 4 million copies.
1996 saw the final record of the decade for Gin Blossoms Congratulations I'm Sorry. The album brought two more hits; "Follow You Down" which spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and "As Long As It Matters" which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group. The album broke into Billboard's Top Ten and a year of touring helped push the record past 1,500,000 in sales. In 5 years, the band released 2 EP's, 2 LP's and over 12 singles that fueled record sales to over 7 million. Their blend of pop & rock, now known as Jangle-Pop, became a musical force that helped define the sound of 90's radio.

Murray Street
Regular price $29.98 Save $-29.98Murray Street is Sonic Youth's twelfth full-length studio effort and first to feature the all-out collaboration (writing, playing and production) of the great Jim O'Rourke. Named after the New York street where the band's studio was situated and where a plane engine landed on September 11, 2001, Murray Street finds the band building their signature avant garde explorations within a more song oriented framework. The results are obliquely melancholic yet tuneful and the album moves effortlessly and enjoyably between tones, structures, textures and melodies with new found purpose and precision. Songs like "The Empty Page," "Disconnection Notice," and "Rain On Tin") easily hold their own among the many highlights in SY's vast and varied catalog.

From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah

Originally issued in 1996, From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah features 16 live Nirvana songs recorded between 1989 and 1994, from Seattle, WA to Springfield, MA, from London to Amsterdam, in venues ranging from small American clubs to the Reading Festival in England. "It's an aggressive record," said Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who along with drummer Dave Grohl listened to more than a hundred hours of tapes to select the tracks. "Hopefully people who didn't get to see us live will get a flavor of what the band was all about. Most of the songs we chose were ones we played every night."
If the previous live Nirvana live album, MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) documented the acoustic side of the band - "Nirvana lite," as Novoselic puts it - then From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah is "Nirvana raw." Two tracks on the album pre-date the band's breakthrough album Nevermind as "Polly" and "Breed" were both recorded in London in December 1989. The majority, however, come from the band's world tour in the winter of 1991 including "Drain You," "Aneurysm," and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Sources for the tracks range from soundboard reference cassettes to 24-track recordings. The album was mixed by Andy Wallace.

Fans have been anticipating an album length project from the longtime collaborators for a decade now and the intriguing Kids See Ghosts is a cathartic and confessional affair with both artists documenting bouts of depression and struggles with drug abuse throughout. "We just have this chemistry that's undeniable, especially when we have to fight for it with each other," Cudi said. Damn.
Regular price $41.99 Save $-41.99In five whirlwind years, Kendrick Lamar has gone from being hip-hop's hottest rising star to one of the most important voices of his generation. And as his latest album, DAMN., proves, he shows no signs of stopping. His third No. 1 in a row, the hotly anticipated release sees Lamar make another about-turn after the fearlessly creative excursions of 2015's To Pimp A Butterfly. If DAMN. is a more stripped-back, direct album, it's also another utterly compelling one. With his laidback flow and thought-provoking lyrics, it finds Kendrick at the very top of his game, making the personal political – and vice versa – and ensuring that he leads the charge, at a time when the world very much needs a voice like his.

OutKast has almost singlehandedly defined the sound of Atlanta rap. Tongue-flippin', rhyme-spittin' and Cadillac-ridin', all with a Southern accent, Big Boi and Dre have proved to be the South's ideal MCs. ATLIENS continues in the same vein as Outkast's 1994 debut, SOUTHERNPLAYALISTICADILLACMUZIK, with producers Organized Noize back to accompany the duo's laid-back flow. Big Boi and Dre proclaim to prove a point with every rhyme, never wasting a line. They like to think of themselves as outcasts from the hip-hop community--aliens,so to speak. Their tracks have an outer-space feeling to them--a feeling that, ironically, has warmed the community right up to them. They're so out, they're in.

Let it Be
Regular price $26.98 Save $-26.98The Replacements Let It Be on LP
Twin/Tone Era LPs Are Available Again After Being Out of Print for Over 20 Years!
Along with Prince and Hüsker Dü, The Replacements put Minneapolis on the rock map in the 1980s. Among America's greatest alternative acts of all-time, the 'Mats rose from chaotic noise-makers to polished craftsmen, leaving at least three unqualified masterpieces in their wake. In a perfect world, Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me would have all gone platinum - but then again, endearing imperfection was always a hallmark of this band's music.
The 'Mats formed in the wake of the punk explosion of the late 1970s. Their anarchic stage shows had earned them considerable notoriety in local clubs. Indie label Twin/Tone took note and signed the quartet, and their first album, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash was issued in 1981. That record and the Stink EP that followed the next year were both pretty much standard-issue hardcore thrash. These early efforts careen wildly between competing tendencies toward indelible genius and drunken abandon, yet are essential just the same. With 1983's Hootenanny, however, audiences began to really take notice of the songs beneath all the sound and fury; "Color Me Impressed" had exactly that effect on discerning rock listeners.
By 1984's Let It Be, The Replacements' exponential growth as musicians – and most particularly, Paul Westerberg's growth as a writer – was undeniable. Let It Be boasts the epic foursome of "I Will Dare," "Favorite Thing," "Unsatisfied," and "Answering Machine" alongside the Kiss cover ("Black Diamond") and a tribute to Ted Nugent ("Gary's Got a Boner"). The album topped critic's polls across the country and earned the group a place on the roster at Sire Records.

Hot Buttered Soul
Regular price $32.98 Save $-32.98Hot Buttered Soul sounds exactly as Isaac Hayes named it. The lush arrangements featuring strings and horns were recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit, home of Motown Records, and had been arranged by Johnny Allen, who had arranged music for The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes, and who would later do the arrangements on the soundtrack to Shaft, for which he won a Grammy. The album's opening track, a cover of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic "Walk on By," was like nothing that had ever been heard before in popular music. Hayes' vocals take more than two minutes to appear. Craft Recordings’ 180g vinyl LP makes the wait even more worthwhile and sounds and looks incredible. Remastered from the original analog tapes by engineer Dave Cooley, it also features a replica old-school style tip-on jacket for exquisite packaging.
Hayes, along with keyboardist Marvell Thomas and The Bar-Keys (Willie Hall, drums; James Alexander, bass; Michael Toles, guitar), recorded the basic tracks for the 1969 set at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Together, they produced the ultimate funk and soul stew to mix with the Detroit strings and horns. "Walk On By" alone runs for 12-minutes, and when it's over there's a sense of having been overwhelmed, but in the nicest way possible. It is so different from Dionne Warwick's original that it stands alone as a definitive reading of this classic number.
The chart-topping album's other standout track is the 18-minute, LP-side-filling "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," a song that had originally been a hit for Glen Campbell. Hayes speaks the intro, which runs for nearly nine minutes, and when he starts to sing, the song develops into an amazing musical experience. He at once strips it bare and rebuilds it into something that defies definition. The coda on "Phoenix" is just awesome as its intro and the album is worth the price of admission for this track alone. The other two numbers on the record are slightly more traditional, with "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" being a funkyfied track that owes something to the kind of step-change music that was beginning to come from Blue Note Records while "One Woman" is the kind of Southern soul ballad that could only have come from Memphis.

British Steel
Regular price $24.98 Save $-24.98There is no overstating Judas Priest's position at the very top of heavy metal's Mount Olympus. The long-term association (eight consecutive live and studio albums) between the band and producer Tom Allom includes the cornerstone 1980 classic British Steel, their second LP together. It was recorded in four weeks at Tittenhurst Park, previously owned by John Lennon, and the home of Ringo Starr at the time. It was British Steel that took Priest to the masses at the onset of the '80s with huge anthems like "Breaking The Law" and "Living After Midnight," earning the band their first RIAA platinum Top 40 album in the U.S. and their first Top 10 in the U.K. in the process. Deeper album cuts like "Metal Gods" and "The Rage" would also prove to become beloved concert staples. Universally hailed as one of the most influential albums in heavy metal history, fellow musicians and disciples credit British Steel for unleashing metal from its blues origins.

Screaming for Vengeance
Regular price $29.98 Save $-29.98Distinguished by dual magnesium-burn guitars, leather-tough percussion, molten-hot melodies, and the unmistakable piercing falsetto of operatic vocalist, Screaming for Vengeance found Judas Priest laying waste to its contemporaries' softer, cheesier hard-rock styles. An effort on which precision-based speed, mainstream accessibility, and resilient attitude meet in equilibrium, the 1982 set remains the British metal legends' top-selling record. Staked by the breakout "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," which burns white-hot with foot-pounding riffs, prize-fighting percussion, and singer Rob Halford's gun-for-hire blare, Screaming for Vengeance clutches hold of the jugular and doesn't let go. A return to the band's gritty, purist roots, the record revisits the themes of darkness, menace, and the unknown firmly established on the pioneering Stained Class and Killing Machine.
With the one-two opening tandem of the instrumental "The Hellion" and stomping "Electric Eye," Priest sounds utterly futuristic and terrifying, the instruments seemingly on a swivel and the sawed-off tones flooding the guitar solos with intimidation. A classic head-out-to-the highway anthem ("Riding on the Wind"), a racing proto-thrash banger ("Screaming for Vengeance"), and a scorching exorcism ("Devil's Child") function as the metal-hued bolts that hold the foundations of this Top 20-charting benchmark in place. Perhaps more so here than on any other record, Priest spit-shines hooks and collusive six-string harmonic leads to perfection, giving listeners yin-yang doses of pain and pleasure, sweet and bitter. Songs at once invite sing-a-longs and fist-pumping responses. Screaming for Vengeance marked the last time Priest would sound this heavy in the '80s.
