In theory, epic gothic rockers Evanescence have done everything but live up to their name, which is defined as a "disappearance" or something that merely "dissipates like vapor." Instead, the Little Rock, AR quintet led by charismatic vocalist/pianist Amy Lee have proved to be a powerful presence in the international arena in the 21st Century. Their elusive sound has drawn comparisons with bands as diverse as nu-metal heroes Linkin Park through to intense symphonic metal acts such as Nightwish and Within Temptation, but in truth, Evanescence have always blazed their own trail.

Cyberpunk. Karen Carpenter. A date with Mary Christ. The hypnogogic state. Go-carts. Deconstruction. UFO's. Rap misogyny. Joan Crawford. Marriage. A teenage girl named Goo. In the primordial soup that is Sonic Youth, one of the most critically-acclaimed underground bands of all-time, the above is just some of the musical fodder for 1990's Goo, the band's seventh album and first on a major label (DGC Records).

Mixing American myth and pop images with alternative ideas about music in a great cosmic blender, Sonic Youth is truly, ultimately, progressive rock - bold and daring, stretching pop to it's limits, unique and transcendent. "It's important that people know that music is a free thing," explained guitarist Thurston Mooore, "and not to be dictated by anyone."

Sonic Youth doesn't throw away the rock cliches here, they reshape them. With skewed, mangled guitar tunings, and lyrical jump cuts, Sonic Youth's songs aren't the sound of things falling apart but rather of them getting put back together. Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Damien Chazelle, critically acclaimed  film La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

The film's integral music and score, a sublime combination of pop, jazz and show tunes, comes courtesy of composer Justin Hurwitz whose creative partnership with Chazelle began on the director's previous films Whiplash (2009) and Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2014). Academy Award winner for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, Hurwitz says that he and Chazelle looked for ways to bring a contemporary language – musical, visual and emotional languages – to a genre that runs the risk of nostalgia.

"The idea of doing not just a musical, but a musical that is about the realities of love and dreams in today's L.A., energized me and Damien," the composer says. "Musicals are so heightened and we adore that about them but we also loved the idea of capturing a real feeling of current life within that heightened world."

One by One is the fourth studio album by alternative rock band Foo Fighters, released on October 22, 2002 by RCA. The album is the first to feature guitarist Chris Shiflett. Production on the album was troubled, with initial recording sessions considered unsatisfying and raising tensions between the band members. They eventually decided to redo the album from scratch during a two-week period at front man Dave Grohl's home studio in Alexandria, Virginia. The songs on the album, which include the successful singles "All My Life" and "Times Like These", have been noted for their introspective lyrics and a heavier and more aggressive sound compared to the band's earlier work, which Grohl said was intended to translate the energy of the Foo Fighters' live performances into a recording. One by One was positively received by critics, winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2004-the second consecutive Grammy Award for Best Rock Album won by the band-and praised for it's sound and production.

Vinyl LP pressing. Dude Ranch is the second studio album by Blink-182. Recorded at Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California with producer Mark Trombino, the album was released in the United States on June 17, 1997, jointly through independent label Cargo Music and major label MCA Records. MCA signed the band in 1996 following moderate sales of their debut Cheshire Cat (1995) and growing popularity of the trio in Australia. Dude Ranch was the band's final recording released on Cargo and their last with original drummer Scott Raynor before he was dismissed from the band in 1998. The band recorded the album during the winter of 1996-1997. With lyrical material written on the band's nonstop tours over the previous years, as well as completed songs, the band recorded with Trombino in sessions that lasted for five weeks.

Jane's Addiction's third release Ritual De Lo Habitual is one of the cornerstones of 1990s alternative rock. The double platinum affair features the group's breakthrough hit "Been Caught Stealing," as well as the genre classics "Stop!," "Ain't No Right" and "Classic Girl," alongside the back-to-back epics "Three Days" and "Then She Did." Unfortunately, Ritual De Lo Habitual would also serve as the band's final album with the original lineup. The members parted ways in 1991 after their last live appearances headlining Lollapalooza, the tour series started by lead singer Perry Farrell.

Vinyl LP pressing. Liam Howe and Chris Corner met as teenagers in the '80s and formed Sneaker Pimps in Hartlepool in 1994, becoming forerunners of trip-hop. They were joined by Kelli Ali (then known as Kelli Dayton) on vocals, with Ian Pickering writing the lyrics. Their debut album Becoming X went Gold in 1996, spawning the hit singles "Spin Spin Sugar" and "6 Underground." The album later inspired the remix album Becoming Remixed, featuring a slew of DJ supremos.
